Not the books you remember

Didn't realize these were re-issued with a different illustrator. Will be returning them.

The new illustrations have neither the terror nor the nostalgia that the originals by Stephen Gammell had.

The choice to remove such unique and memorable artwork in favor of something so plain and unremarkable is baffling, particularly after 30 years of the originals being printed.

These might be better toned down for your (boring) children, but if you were hoping to reminisce about the terrors of your childhood, you'll have to look elsewhere.

NOT THE ORIGINAL ARTIST!

Because I remember loving and being absolutely terrified at these books when I was a kid, I recently purchased all 3 and just received them today. To my horror (and not in a good way) I found that they've published them with a DIFFERENT ILLUSTRATOR! With all due respect to Mr. Helmquist (the new guy) and certainly to Mr. Schwartz (the original author), these books were made for me by the art of Stephen Gammell. I'm sure they did this because so many parents tried to get the books banned in their day because of the ghastly drawings, but this is really a tragedy. I would suggest looking elsewhere for original copies of the books as they should be seen. Don't buy them here - you'll be missing out on part of what made these books so wonderful in the first place.

Great for little kids sitting up late at night telling ghost stories.

I found this book on Amazon while I was searching for good Halloween books. The reviews were great for both the stories and illustrations. I was aware this was a collection of children's stories culled from folklore by the author which is a cool concept. I was told by my friends who read these stories as children that this was a classic and it may be. However, this book is truly for kids right down the instructions to insert jump scares in certain places when reading aloud. Not what I was looking for as I'm a middle aged man interested more in Lovecraft. type stories.

A young Tabori priest is sent to his first posting in the little town of Borl Quist, deep in the huge forests of the distant province of Sian. He expects to find a warm welcome among the hospitable foresters who live among the magnificent trees known as Forest Giants and is not disappointed. What he does not expect to find is the Bewitcher who also lives there.

So begins this collection of short stories that roughly chronicle the life of Rowan d’Rhys del’Quist – the man who came to be known as Red Rowan, a great hero and legend in his own lifetime.

Also included is a preview chapter from the final novel in the Red Rowan trilogy – Red Rowan Book3: The Return of the Reluctant Hero.

A Fine Supplement to the Trilogy

While listed on Goodreads as Red Rowan 4, this is really much more a collection of tales (and at least one alternate version of events) that didn't quite fit into the narrative scheme of the books. I don't honestly know if these are sections removed when the author was editing the books, or whether they were something she wrote to flesh out ideas prior to working on a given section, but either way, I am glad she shared them. I was really concerned that book two would totally crush and demolish Rowan, and, after book one, I wasn't anxious for that to happen. Authors seem to love building a good, solid, likeable character only to crush him under the weight of the world, but I didn't really want to see that happen. I saw this, and noticed it was short stories that occurred during his life, so risking spoilers, I read it, just to see if my fears were confirmed. Some of my fears were confirmed, but many were not, so after reading this I went on to book two, and then quite eagerly to book three. If you like Rowan's world and want to read a bit more about it, then this is a fine addition to your reading list, but it isn't necessary to enjoy the trilogy.

John Rutter was born in London in 1945 and studied music at Clare College, Cambridge. His compositions embrace choral, orchestral, and instrumental music, and he has edited or co-edited various choral anthologies, including four Carols for Choirs volumes with Sir David Willcocks and the Oxford Choral Classics series. From 1975 to 1979 he was Director of Music at Clare College, and in 1981 he formed his own choir, the Cambridge Singers. He now divides his time between composition and conducting and is sought after as a guest conductor for the world's leading choirs and orchestras.

Title of book should be: "Echo CARTOONS Made Easy"

So I bought this book thinking that it would be a good introduction to echos. Echo's are essentially b/w pictures w/ doppler being in color. This book doens't have a single actual image. It's cartoons like the front of the cover. Really defeats the purpose of reading the book. The attached cd-rom has mpg file of proceedure doing echos. Again, it's very poor quality. Looks like a poor vhs w/ pulsating color cast that darken and brighten (imagine someone trying to copy of vhs video w/ macrovision). Very annoying. I couldn't force myself to watch it cuz it gave me a headache.

A few months ago, I received a book from McFarland & Company, Inc. for review, courtesy of the book’s author and my good friend, Theresa Bane. Theresa and I have been corresponding for a few years now, and she is an absolute delight to speak to and interact with. In addition, Theresa is a renowned vampirologist and an expert on the Undead. She has written two books about vampires and a number of others about demons, giants, faeries, monsters, haunted places, folklore, and ghosts. It is the last one that the book in question covers, and it is entitled Encyclopedia of Ghosts and Spirits in World Mythology (McFarland & Company, 2016).

Like most of Theresa’s books, the encyclopedia is an academic work, and every type of ghost and spirit gets an entry of its own in an A-Z format. Theresa’s research is painstakingly thorough, and the bibliography is one of the longest and the most extensive that I’ve ever seen. Some of the book’s entries are long and very detailed, while others consist of only a single sentence and only give a brief description. However, most of the entries fall somewhere in between the two. And after each entry, Theresa gives her sources. And for a book of only 169 pages, that’s a lot of information!

This book contains a number of different spirit types, including spirits of the dead (ghosts), nature spirits, faeries, yōkai, demonic spirits, household spirits, elementals, ancestral spirits, vampiric spirits, genii loci (spirits attached to a place), guardian spirits, monsters, different types of djinn, and a great deal more. The entries feature all kinds of entities, from the Banshee (and all variations thereof) to the Ghoul, from the Acheri to the Grey Lady, and a host of others in alphabetical order, from the Aatxe to the Zuzeca. And since this book deals with ghosts and spirits that are found in cultures all over the world, you won’t find any information pertaining to haunted places of any kind. There are literally thousands of books on that subject available for your perusal.

Overall, Theresa’s book is well-written, neatly organized, free of flaws, and a veritable treasure trove of information. Her research is incredibly thorough and detailed, with an index for quickly locating specific entries and an extensive bibliography for further reading and research. Whether you’re a serious researcher or just curious, this book is an incredible read. I am truly thankful that McFarland & Company and Theresa have given me the opportunity to review this title, and I hope to review more of their titles in the near future. I heartily recommend this title to all of my friends.

Is good. Pretty much what I expected

Is good. Pretty much what I expected. First entry is "Aatxe" of Basque mythology. Last is Zuzeca of North American Lakota. It is a listing of ghosts and a their legends/lore from folklore around the world. If u r really into ghosts legends/lore u will like this. Contains more common entries such as: Grim(church grim), Galley Beggar, Banshee, Will-O'-the Wisp, Djinn, Familiar spirit, Unicorn, Jack o lantern, kachina, just to name a few. And lots of stuff u have never heard of. Is an interesting good reference book. If u have a collection of ghost books this will fit right in. Is good as a casual read, or for reference.

Great WWII Survival Adventure

In recent years, the story of Louis Zamperini (immortalized in both print and visual media) and his harrowing tale of survival captivated the nation. While reading Michael P. Spradlin’s “Into The Killing Seas”, I couldn’t help but wonder if that “Unbroken” story didn’t have a bit of an influence on the tale, as it also is an incredible story (this time told in historical-fiction style) of the U.S.S. Indianapolis sinking towards the end of WWII.

For a basic plot summary, this novel tells the story of two young brothers, Patrick & Teddy, who are separated from their parents due to the war (living in an orphanage in the Pacific) and wanting desperately to get back to them. When the boys make the acquaintance of Benny, a crew member on the Indianapolis, they hatch a plan to hide themselves on the ship as stowaways. Of course, the ship is attack by the Japanese and sunk, leaving hundreds of men—including Benny, Patrick, & Teddy—in the shark-infested waters.

First and foremost, “Into The Killing Seas” is a great adventure/survival tale. Young readers will be mesmerized by the exploits of the young boys, especially when the sharks show up and must be reckoned with. Very exciting reading.

What author Spradlin also does very well, however, is create characters that are interesting and unique. Sometimes, books aimed at YA audiences contain more “caricatures” than “characters”, but this is profoundly not the case here. The three boys think/act like real young boys might, and the interplay between them is always fresh & interesting.

Finally, even though I won’t reveal much here due to potential spoilers, the ending of this book will throw you for such a big loop that even adult readers won’t see it coming. The fact that Spradlin can pull off such a remarkable ending in a YA novel (by their very nature being relatively simple compared to “adult” novels) speaks volumes towards his writing craftsmanship.

I very much enjoyed reading “Into The Killing Seas” and would highly recommend it to any and all readers. The text type is rather large and the books has the look/feel of something you would find in a middle school media center, but (even if you are an adult) don’t let that dissuade you from giving it a chance. In the tradition of “Unbroken”, it has a great survival story to tell.

Action! Adventure! Things Blow up! and a Shark Attack.

OH MY GOODNESS! This is the 19th of Michael Spradlin's books and the best yet. He uses historical fiction in the retelling of the deadliest shark attack in history, the sinking of the USS Indianapolis. Patrick and his younger brother Teddy have become separated from their parents in the ending days of World War II. With the help of their friend Benny, they sneak on the Indy, to go in search of their parents. That's when IT happens and they are forced for survive for days in the intense heat, without food or water when sharks begin to circle the area.

As a middle school teacher, this became a favorite of my students especially my reluctant readers because of the fast pace, and intense but carefully worded action. This would be appropriate for any student 5th grade or older.

SPOILER ALERT: DO NOT READ THE LAST PAGES FIRST! You won't believe the surprise at the end.

Killer reads!!!!!

If you like to go on adventures this is the book for you. The author likes to give you cliffhangers to keep you reading. Into the Killing Seas will keep you guessing until the end. This was a very exciting and wonderful book to read. I give it five stars because I enjoyed it so much.

"Manipulation" refers to a variety of physical changes made to the world around us. Mechanics of Robotic Manipulation addresses one form of robotic manipulation, moving objects, and the various processes involved -- grasping, carrying, pushing, dropping, throwing, and so on. Unlike most books on the subject, it focuses on manipulation rather than manipulators. This attention to processes rather than devices allows a more fundamental approach, leading to results that apply to a broad range of devices, not just robotic arms.

The book draws both on classical mechanics and on classical planning, which introduces the element of imperfect information. The book does not propose a specific solution to the problem of manipulation, but rather outlines a path of inquiry.

Fundamentals of the study of robotic manipulation

This is a beautiful introduction to the field of robotic manipulation, and should be required reading for all graduate students in robotics. Each topic is treated carefully and rigorously. It is only fair to admit that the author was my Ph.D. advisor.

There is a strong emphasis on providing a mental toolkit for reasoning about physical systems. A particular highlight is the selection of graphical methods for thinking about rigid body systems with friction and contact. The careful reader, after working through this book, will be able to reason about mechanical systems with pencil and paper, rather than blind implementations of computer simulations.

The book is dense and requires significant work from the reader. Though there are no prerequisites for the book other than basic calculus, many of the proofs and techniques require some mathematical sophistication and a strong attention to detail to follow.

The book is also specialized, and does not attempt to cover all the details of manipulator design, modeling, or control -- instead, the focus is on the motion of the system being manipulated, which might be much more interesting than the manipulator itself.

For the above reasons, this book is not for everyone, but as a robotics researcher, I have come back to this book over and over again while reviewing papers or thinking about how to quickly model and understand a new system.

Nice for overview, bad for understanding

Mason covers quite a collection of techniques in his book; so as an partial overview of work done on techniques addressing problems of mechanical nature in robotics, this book is reasonable. One can use it as a starting point to find more information on these topics.
However, in my opinion the book is not suitable to gain an understanding of the subject. Mason tries to cover many methods but often fails to clearly describe the essence of techniques. I often find myself reading the same section a number of times to piece together the essence of how a technique works.
