Doreen Cronin (Click, Clack Moo: Cows That Type) and cartoonist Harry Bliss (illustrator of A Fine, Fine School) shed a whole new light on a creature that spends most of its time underground: the earthworm. Written in diary form, this truly hilarious picture book tracks the ins and outs of a worm's life from the perspective of the worm family's young son. Take June 15's entry: "My older sister thinks she's so pretty. I told her that no matter how much time she spends looking in the mirror, her face will always look just like her rear end. Spider thought that was really funny. Mom did not." Except for the fact that he can't chew gum or have a dog, the boy likes being a worm. He never has to go to the dentist ("No cavities--no teeth, either"), he never gets in trouble for tracking mud through the house, and he never has to take a bath. As long as he can remember Mom's rule "Never bother Daddy when he's eating the newspaper," all is well. Bliss's endearing cartoonish illustrations of anthropomorphized worms are clever visual punchlines for Cronin's delightfully deadpan humor. For example, "June 5: Today we made macaroni necklaces in art class" sounds normal enough until you see the worms wearing one piece of macaroni around their necks, taking up a good part of each worm's body. Difficulties such as having no arms, having a head that looks a lot like your rear end, and facing the dangers imposed by people digging for bait are balanced by a loving family and good friends. The young protagonist describes playing with his friend Spider, engaging in a variety of activities at school, and interacting with his parents and sister. Packed into these droll slice-of-worm-life vignettes are a few facts about earthworms and their behavior, all rendered with a dry sense of humor. The full-color watercolor-and-ink illustrations sprawl across the pages in lush earth tones. Bliss's cartoons give the worms lots of personality without overly anthropomorphizing them. The use of multiple perspectives will have children eagerly looking at the pictures to identify objects and locales. Primary-grade youngsters will especially appreciate the classroom scenes. This quirky worm's-eye view of the world makes these ubiquitous invertebrates a little more understandable and a lot more fun.

There's no sustained story here, as there was in Cronin's wonderful Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type (2000), but the hilarious vignettes of the worm-child with his family, friends, and enemies show the absurd in humans as much as in the wriggling creatures in the earth. When the worm forgets his lunch, he eats his homework, and he loves telling his older sister that her face will always look like her rear end. One advantage of being a worm is that he never has to go to the dentist: no cavities. "No teeth, either," says Dr. D. Kay. The pictures are both silly and affectionate, whether the worm holds a pencil or hugs his favorite pile of dirt. Such a Great Book!

I bought this book when it first came out and have shared it with so many people who love it! This book is a hoot! A little worm keeps a journal, sharing daily life from a worm's perspective and it's very funny - such as "Dad was busy eating the newspaper" and worries about fishing season starting or trying to make it across a playground blacktop with kids jumping rope. I just love this book! The illustrations are wonderful, but the text is excellent. Just one of the best books I own! Kids love it, too, of course!

Great for Lecture and USMLE prep.

This book is a must have for USMLE Step 1 Prep. If you plan on getting this book the last 2 weeks prior to steps, don't bother. However if you get this book early on and start using it on a regular biases for lecture and cross reference topics or need further clarifications or to look at cases. This is your book.

I would use this with the First Aid and use the case files in the end of the chapters and the bold highlighted topics of each chapter as mental maps. Should you hit upon a topic you're not familiar with look it up!

USMLE will test you're ability to understand topics and incorporate them into clinical situations.

This book is clear an concise but is is not well organized for easy reference. The book is meant as an overview with only one or two examples and it accomplishes this - but it is not written to encompass all the different diseases or processes. Look elsewhere if you are looking for a more all-encompassing text but for review or an overview of the processes with a few examples this is a wonderful text.

Dr Peter S. Morrell is Director of Research in the Department of Air Transport, College of Aeronautics, Cranfield University, UK. He is currently European Editor of the Journal of Air Transport Management, and has a doctorate from Cranfield University and graduate degrees from the University of Cambridge, UK and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA. He has advised governments, airlines, airports and investment banks on aviation over the past 35 years. He has also lectured on airline economics and finance to universities and institutions around the world including Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in the US, Instituto Aviaçao Civil, Brazil, Ecole National de L'Aviation Civile (ENAC), France, the Universities of Westminster and Loughborough in the UK, Danube University, Austria, Chang Jung University, Taiwan, University of New South Wales, and is currently visiting lecturer to the Polytechnic University in Hong Kong.

The only book out there that digs as deep and covers lots of ground

There aren't any books out there that dig as deep and tackle as many subjects in the cargo industry. You can look into so many sources to find so many benchmarks and numbers on the industry's market and operations and you would still not have covered as much ground as this book covers. The book is split nicely into a good structure, the references are recent, and the industry examples and tables covering the major players are well placed and discussed in good detail. This is a good book for anyone interested in tackling this industry in greater depth.

Low quality, low value-added

Packt's conveyor is not slowing down: only three months ago I surveyed their fresh crop of "data science with R" offerings

"Mastering Predictive Analytics with R" by Forte, �32.99
"Mastering Machine Learning with R" by Lesmeister, �34.99
"R Data Analysis Cookbook" by Viswanathan and Viswanathan, �29.99
"Machine Learning with R Cookbook" by Yu-Wei, �30.99

and now there are four more:

"Unsupervised Learning with R" by Pacheco, �25.99
"Data Analysis with R" by Fischetti, �34.99
"Learning Predictive Analytics with R" by Mayor, �31.99
"Mastering Data Analysis with R" by Daroczi, �34.99

So far I have gone through the first two "new" titles. Fischetti's is the rare exception from the norm, the good book in Packt's sea of dross. (It is, however, much closer to "proper" statistics than to machine-learning methods, so - skipping ahead - not a direct competitor to this title).

Pacheco's, on the other hand, is a typical Packt product, a glorified copy-paste of vignettes of several R packages, with minimal effort to integrate and present the content, or explain the algorithms. The book's "unique selling proposition", it seems, is covering one or two relevant packages more per topic than its competitors do. On the other hand, those competitors - take Forte, for example - cover a lot of topics when "Unsupervised Learning" attempts only three: clustering, association rules, and PCA.

Pass this inferior product without a second thought. In the Packt stable, better options are the books by Forte and Lantz. The best book overall is "Introduction to Statistical Learning" by Witten et al.

UPD. With the benefit of a little more life experience, I would say: don't spend your time on *any* R book. Python is the way to go.

Pretty good history, not enough paintings

The use of linear perspective in art can be traced back to Brunelleschi's now lost panels depicting the Baptistery of Florence and the Palazzo Vecchio (1425). Brunelleschi observed the buildings in a mirror and attempted to capture this plane representation faithfully. Edgerton spends much time trying to reconstruct these "demonstrations". The basic ideas of linear perspective were soon afterwards applied by Masaccio in his Trinity fresco and by Masaccio and Masolino in the Brancacci Chapel frescoes, and became widespread after 1435 when Alberti wrote the first text on linear perspective, the Della pittura. Allberti says: "I decide how large I wish the human figures in the painting to be. I divide the height of this man into three parts ... With this measure I divide the bottom line ... into as many parts as it will hold." Then we fix the "centric point" (the observers straight-ahead point on the horizon ). "The suitable position for this centric point is no higher from the base line than the height of the man ... for in this way both the viewers and the objects in the painting will seem to be on the same plane. Having placed the centric point, I draw lines from it to each of the divisions on the base line." Through the centric point we draw the horizon. "This line is for me a limit or boundary, which no quantity exceeds that is not higher than the eye of the spectator ... This is why men depicted standing in the parallel [to the horizon] furthest away are a great deal smaller than those in the nearer ones, a phenomenon which is clearly demonstrated by nature herself, for in churches we see the heads of men walking about, moving at more or less the same height, while the feet of those further away may correspond to the knee-level of those in front."

Next we learn the "costruzione legittima" construction of tiled floors, although the fact that construction lines typically need to be extended off-canvas seems to have caused some confusion. As examples of early uses of Alberti's text and somewhat unsuccessful costruzione legittimas we study two drawings by Bellini and Pisanello, where "the original perspective layout constructions can still be seen under the finishing ink". These artists "seem to have followed Alberti's instructions to the letter---to the best of their understanding".

As for the reasons for the popularity of perspective, Edgerton emphasises religious motives: "perspective rules were accepted by ... early artists because it gave their depicted scenes a sense of harmony with natural law, thereby underscoring man's moral responsibility within God's geometrically ordered universe". "Linear perspective rules themselves had to be modified of even abandoned if they conflicted with the pictures true purpose in this sense", as we see in the case of a Veneziano altarpiece, which violates perspective laws and has the centric point at waist level.

We next study how linear perspective was influenced by the science of optics. There is of course the notion, in Alberti's words, that "a painting will be the intersection of a visual pyramid". Light rays from the periphery of the pyramid need to travel longer to get to the canvas so "they weaken and lose their sharpness", Alberti explains, and "the reason for this has been discovered: as they pass through the air, these and all other visual rays are laden and imbued with lights and colors; but the air too is endowed with a certain density, and in consequence the rays get tired and lose a good part of their burden as they penetrate the atmosphere. So it is rightly said that the greater the distance, the more obscure and dark the surface appears."

Edgerton also cites an optical analogy in Dante that "upholds the wisdom of looking someone 'straight in the eye', with all its overtones of detecting another's truthfulness and communicating one's own sincerity" as an illustration of why Renaissance artists preferred the central viewpoint where walls and floor tiles tend towards the centric point in the middle of the horizon. "During the fourteenth century there had been a temporary favoring of charming oblique views. Thereafter it was as if painters wanted to recapture the solemn spirit of the old traditional Christian messages" and "came more and more to believe that things planned or seen from a central viewpoint had greater monumentality and moral authority".

Next we study the influence of cartography on linear perspective. Edgerton make a big deal of this, but many connections with painting seem quite superficial, such as a Giotto painting that appears conformal but not distance-preserving and the supposed influence of latitude-longitude grid thinking on Alberti's gridded veil method and Uccello's chalice drawing.

A comprehensive history of a nation

I have grown up as part of the Afrikaner nation and always took a keen interest in history. This exhaustive work gives an enormous amount of context to the time in which I grew up, the events which unfolded before and around me, and left me with a much clearer understanding of the status and behavior of the Afrikaners then and today.

My conclusion is that the Afrikaners are extremely resilient and most often wrong in the face of adversity, yet very adaptable and agreeable when the sailing is smooth. Today in 2014, the Afrikaners have no more collective goals to work towards, and have happily stepped off that path in favour of seeking individual goals. The vast majority are succeeding in their individual goals and have become exemplary citizens of the South African community.
