About the Author
Professor H. G. Koenigsberger FBA is one of Britain's senior historians. German by birth, he has taught at Manchester, Nottingham, Cornell and London, and is now Professor of History Emeritus and Fellow, King's College London. Koenigsberger is also a Past President of the International Commission for the History of Representative and Parliamentary Institutions, and in 1987 Cambridge published a festschrift in his honour under the title Politics and Culture in Early Modern Europe, ed. Mack and Jacob. In the late 1960s Koenigsberger was a founder-editor (with Professor Sir John Elliott) of the 'Cambridge Studies in Early Modern History' series, where his book is now being published.

Great book, even if you don't like history !

I always hated world history, but since starting to fiddle with genealogy, I'm finding that I need history books to learn more about the people showing up in my family tree. General topic books like this one are very helpful. I don't get the low down on the entire planet- just the location and time period I want to check in to. The maps, photos, and the way the stories are broken down makes focusing on one period of time, one event, or one person much easier to find. Worth getting, imho :)

Wonderful book

I was looking for a book that would help me eliminate some relationship ills but did not want traditional methods. I wasn't sure what this book was going to bring me, but I received practical instructions along with spells that so far seem to work, to help me deal with and remove some of the road blocks I have with relationships. Basically, trust, love, healing and patience is the key foundation to have in your heart before trying to use spell work to manifest relationships. Awesome book, not just witchcraft!!

I have most of Christopher Penczak's books and they are all really good. When this one came out I grabbed it up as the topic was timely for me. I finished releasing my old relationship and found ways to open up to a new one energetically. Arlene Wilson's Review Is Misguided

Arlene Wilson gave this book a terrible review and all of her points for doing so are misguided for a few reasons, First, Arlene does not understand that this is not a general survey text for an introduction class in philosophy. This text is specific to epistemology. Secondly, Wilson does not understand that this book is an anthology of papers written by philosophers dating back to the ancients. That being said, this is not an instructional textbook. It is a reader and the authors do a great job of presenting an overview of the major ideas contained in each section. The instruction she seeks is supposed to come from someone trained in philosophy. It is possible to learn from the papers contained in the text, but only under the presupposition that one has already studied somewhat extensively in philosophy; otherwise, confusion, such as that experienced by Wilson is sure to follow.

I am a professor at City College of San Francisco, and I use this text for my class PHIL4: Knowledge because it contains all of the major historical treatises on epistemology and many seminal contemporary works. Furthermore, the book is organized in such a way that there are often main articles and responses to those articles. For example, the Gettier paper on the insufficiency of the JTB account of knowledge includes two enlightening responses. Lastly, all of the papers in the text are fairly non-technical. In other words, one does not need knowledge of advanced predicate calculus to understand the content, so intro students can grasp what's at stake with each topic, with the guidance of an instructor, of course.

On New Year's Day, 1870, Adolph Korn, the author's ancestor and son of German immigrants, was captured by three Apaches near his family's cabin in central Texas. Adolph was traded to a band of Quahada Comanches, with whom he lived until November 1872, when the Comanches traded their captives for those held by the U.S. Army. Adolph was irrevocably changed. Considering himself Indian, he lived in a cave, and died alone in 1900. The author's search into Korn's sad life led him to the similar stories of eight other children captured in Texas between 1865 and 1871. Drawing on his tenacious research and interviews with the captives' descendants, Zesch compiles a gripping account of the lives of these children as they lived and traveled with their Indian captors. He delves into the reasons for their "Indianization," which for most of them lasted the rest of their lives, and discusses why they couldn't adjust to white society. A fascinating, meticulously documented chronicle of the often-painful confrontations between whites and Indians during the final years of Indian Territory. Deborah Donovan

Scott Zesch grew up in Mason County, Texas and graduated from Texas A&M University and Harvard Law School. He is the author of the novel Alamo Heights, and he is the winner of the Western History Association's Ray Allen Billington Award. He divides his time between New York City and a ranch in Art, Texas (population 3).

A fascinating read

Anyone who longs for the good old' days of the wild west should read this book. There was cruelty on the part of the native Americans and the whites both, but the whites were just flat-out sleazy when it came to keeping treaties. The dissolution of the buffalo is a disgrace. This is a fascinating story that explains why many captives preferred to stay with their captors. The Comanche had an idyllic lifestyle before the invasion of the white men. This book is a history lesson worked in as a back drop to a great story. I recommend it.

A thought-provoking page-turner

A few years back, Scott Zesch was doing family history when he ran across a grave of a long-lost ancestor named Adolf Korn. Scott eventually learned that Adolf had been a captive of the Comanche Indians for several years as a boy. After being "rescued," he was always strange, and ended up living his life as a hermit in a cave.

Zesch expanded his research, and the result was "The Captured," a fascinating book about children captured by the Comanches, their experiences, and what became of them in later years. Zesch discovered that children younger than puberty tended to assimilate almost immediately; they forgot their native language (English or German) and even lost their attachment to their mothers. Zesch examines this heartbreaking psychology through his research into the lives of the individuals, which he relates in vivid detail.

"The Captured" is a thoughtful book that both sweeps you up in human drama and leaves you with a lot of things to think about.

Michael R. Marrus is the Chancellor Rose and Ray Wolfe Professor Emeritus of Holocaust Studies and the former dean of the School of Graduate Studies at the University of Toronto.
