Attic Windows: A New View

This book is full of ideas on Attic Window quilts and wall hangings. The authors take the reader through colour and pattern choices, how to do an attic window and finally and great way to do binding. There are many coloured photographs using a variety of different fabrics. Included are the use of panels, using several different fabrics, applique and different size windows within a quilt or wall hanging.
I have used this book many times when doing attic windows and it has inspired me to look at this technique creatively.
If you are an avid quilter, this book is a good one to add to your collection.

The book provides a comprehensive lesson in making the beautiful Attic Windows quilt, from the simplest version to the most complex. Includes lessons in perspective and use of tone to add depth. There are pictures of many sample quilts for inspiration, and the instructions are clear and easy to follow. I heighly recommend for quilters of all skill levels.

Great addition to my Deeping collection

I'll be forever grateful to the Warwick Deeping fan who has painstakingly sought out all the lost stories of WD found in various dusty periodicals over several decades. He has compiled not just one chunkster, but SIX volumes of almost six hundred pages EACH, available to purchase on Amazon. Amazing!

I've been chewing over this volume for a couple of months now, using it as one would coffee beans, sniffing them between perfume testing to cleanse the senses. It's been perfect.

I never thought I was a fan of short stories, but I'm finding recently that I really am; when you have to read in snatches, short stories really fit the bill.

And Deeping fits the bill. End of story.

Great storyteller from the early 20th Century

It's taken me a few months to read this mighty volume of 567 pages. The final 3 pages include details of where and when each of the 42 short stories were published. The author tested out plot lines and characters in some of these stories that would later be used in novels. Whether your interest is in historical fiction set prior to the Great War or later, you'll find much enjoyment and pleasure in this fine collection. I can thoroughly recommend it, not only to fans, but to all discerning readers.

About the Author

Yamada Koun Roshi stand by himself with his particular view of the dharma teachings and the zen practice. He gave us valuable and profound teachings with his well known "Gateless Gate". Here he focuses on zen practice (zazen) and insist in his point of the importance of awakening as the real beginning of the zen practice.

And many aspects of Zen and how it relates to life are answered. As this book is a result of years of dokusan (private meeting) of Yamada Kuon Roshi with his many students. So this books helps very much in the Zen practice.

Each single-page or double-page entry is accompanied by a two- or four-line rhyme for younger children and, in a vertical border, paragraphs of information for older readers. The alphabetical device inevitably makes for a rather haphazard arrangement of topics, and the rhymed couplets vary in quality. Still, the paragraphs of information are clearly written, often lively, and well worth reading; Parra’s paintings illustrate them with flair and distinction. If you are struggling with marital infidelity, this book will help you heal your relationship

Speaking as a counselor, this is a valuable book. Dr. People’s book is an essential tool for those who have felt the pain of infidelity in their relationship. Written for the couple and the professional therapist, her book attest to the ability for couples to find solutions to their marital infidelity. I highly recommend this book to the couple because it is both clear yet respectful. The text presents a framework for the head to understand the emotional impact of the affair so that the heart can heal from the infidelity. If you are struggling with marital infidelity, this book will help you maintain your relationship- one that you have invested time, life, and love.
For the professional it is a valuable tool to address marital infidelity from a solution focused base. While still having respect for longer term therapeutic methods (Gestalt, Psychodynamic, etc....) that might be employed once the crisis is addressed. Dr. Peoples provides methods that will aid the healing process. Too many times these long -term therapies shoot themselves in the foot by deferring to process rather than employing interventions that are steps for healing and change. The Infidelity Survival Plan is an easy to read, well thought out text that explains the dynamics of relationships, beliefs, values, and hurt. Dr. Peoples explains in understandable terminology how we formulate our values and beliefs and the impact these have upon relationships. She normalizes the painful experience of feeling betrayed and allows us a step-by-step guide to healing. As a therapist and clinical supervisor for more than 30 years I have used similar methodology and techniques as Dr. Peoples but have not synthesized them into such a cohesive package as Dr. Peoples has done in this book. When reading it on truly gets the feeling that they’re having a conversation with their therapist. I have already recommended this book to clients in opposite sex and same-sex relationships. This mindful book will assist anyone who has struggled or is struggling with the aspects and undercurrents of infidelity. It is also a must read for any clinician working with couples where feelings of unfaithfulness or disloyalty are issues in treatment. Dr. John D, Massella

As a therapist in private practice working with individuals, I find this book to be a practical guide to helping hurt partners deal with the disastrous effects that infidelity can cause. The book is laid out in clear, rational steps to assist in increasing communications to understand and resolve the conflict, manage feelings and work toward breaking the negative cycles that perpetuate the drama and stunt any hope of progress in healing the relationship. This is the way that people learn to change patterns and internalize the change- through behavior. This book really conveys hope! This is an useful book which explains the concepts of QTP and helps to get practical knowledge in automated testing, which is very useful for beginners. This book is a perfect mix of the concepts which are useful for beginner and advanced professionals.

This book is like looking through the tutorial HP provided for learning QTP. I would not have bought this book if I knew this was the case. The author did not provide examples based on his work experiences rather on the examples from the tutorial. I am disappointed.

This is a good book for beginners who don't have access to QTP tool. It takes care of both GUI part of QTP and also the how to do it by code.I recommend this book for all QTP beginners and reference book for advanced users.

Book review and important update on next novel

I just received the book which I had pre-ordered from Amazon. I could not put the book down from the moment I started reading the first page. As a warning to people expecting the same adventure format of the last three previous books, this book is slightly different. I think the author is trying to mature Alex and making him a stronger/ more forceful character than the more fearful character he was in the previous books. Alex acts as a leader in this book even though he is not strictly speaking on an adventure in this story. The action is virtually nonstop in this book. The bad guys are much stronger and smarter in this book and the challenges are at a much higher level for Alex now. My only regret with this book is I miss all the opportunities for treasure that were in his adventures in the earlier novels. My favorite part is where we finally find out what is the mysterious ring for from the first book. That has been driving me crazy with curiosity since the first book. In conclusion Alex is a more mature/ confident character than in the previous novels and the storyline is more mature to reflect this change. Be ready for a very exciting ride.

Update on next novel 10/6/2014: "The Axe of Sundering" was due to be out early 2015. I looked on the author's blog to see how things were going and unfortunately he has suffered a minor stroke affecting his left hand. I wish him a swift recovery and hope to see him back to his usual level of writing shortly.

Interesting, but leans heavily on other works

I first want to say that this series has had potential from the beginning. It is funny, moral, clean, and engaging, and it drew me in from the first. M.L. Forman clearly has a lot of creativity and originality--I'd just rather the series lose the copying from other literary masterpieces. I love the premise, Alex is pretty interesting, and there are just enough "plot balls" thrown into the air that I want to see how they fall. ("Plot balls" is something that a fiction teacher once told me about. Authors juggle plot balls--a plot here, a subplot here, and another one there--by throwing them into the story at different times and resolving them at different times as well.) I still want to know what's going to happen in "Adventurers Wanted," even though I have been somewhat disillusioned by the series by now.

There are some interesting premises in this series. I like the whole idea of adventurers, and the concepts are pretty unique--adventuring bags (oh, wait, that was in "Fablehaven"), wizardry, the Wall, and the Oracles. And, of course, Alex is a paragon. He is, after all, a dragon, a dragon lord, a dragon slayer (are those compatible?), part-human/dwarf/elf (with a good dose of missing parent syndrome), a superhero wizard, a healer, an adventurer, a prophecy-fulfiller, a mini-Oracle/sage, a warrior, a raven-whisperer, a shadow-slayer, and a perfect person in every way. I like a good hero, but there is such a thing as going too far. Plus, whenever he goes to the wall (the border of death in this book), it is consistently described as difficult to go to because it is so compelling, but he never has any trouble with it. Instead, he saves lots of people from being pulled over the wall into the shadow of death. If someone is perfect already, where in the world can he go? There is no potential for real character development. In this book, the character development is limited to discussions about Alex's identity as a wizard--meaning, he is a wizard and doesn't try to hide it at all even when his friends tell him to be subtle. The most discreet he gets is when he uses spells to wipe others' memory. Don't get me wrong--I love the adventures Alex has, and everything really is very exciting and is frequently well-written enough to hook me, but the two-dimensionality of the protagonist is frustrating for me as a reader. Maybe I'm not the target age for this series, but I like books that can honestly appeal to multiple age levels.

I also don't actually see Alex changing. He is a very two-dimensional character for me; he sometimes is [sort of] tempted to stray off of the right and moral path, but he easily conquers such temptations because he is a god. Or not. The closest he gets to real temptation is through the villains' spells, BUT because he is a true wizard (remember?) he can throw such spells off easily. But really, he doesn't actually have any real internal struggles, and he destroys everything in his path with no effort whatsoever. The worst that happens to him is that he gets really tired and has to take a nap for three days. Two of his acquaintances are violently killed and he emerges without a single scratch. Just major exhaustion.

The main problem with this series is that it often seems to openly plagiarize The Lord of the Rings series. We have seen the LOTR pattern since the beginning, ever since Alex faced off a troll and turned it to stone by exposing it to sunlight (refer to "The Hobbit"). He found a ring. He has been traveling with a band of adventurers--the Fellowship--, and in the first book, he fought a dragon with the elvish-made sword Moonslayer (Sting) while protected with a true silver (mithril) vest. The second and third books were a little better. There was, of course, a continuation of the past ideas and motifs, but Forman expanded his ideas a little. There were more adventures without so much obvious dependence on J.R.R. Tolkien's inspiration.

But this...

First of all, it is NOT alright to have a chapter entitled "Many Meetings." If we're talking about plagiarism, don't chapter titles count, too? That is one of the most memorable chapter titles in the LOTR series (The Fellowship of the Ring, Part II, Chapter I). And who isn't familiar with the song from the Peter Jackson LOTR movies that has the same title? If you don't believe me, go to this link: [...] I'd bet that you know it.

And then we have the cameo that Alex makes for a certain young lady. Is it just me, or is that from Eragon? Remember, that series blatantly plagiarized from LOTR as well, so this is borrowing from a borrower...right? Correct me if I'm wrong.

But the worst one is that we finally figure out that the ring Alex has been carrying around truly is "The One Ring to Rule Them All," meant for the Returning King [of Nezza].
