But Mrs. Savage is determined to establish a fund to help others realize their hopes and dreams. In the sanatorium she meets various social misfits, men and women who just cannot adjust themselves to life, people who need the help Mrs. Savage can provide. In getting to know them, she realizes that she will find happiness with them and plans to spend the rest of her life as one of them. But when the doctor tells her there is no reason why she should remain, she hesitates to go out into a hard world where people seem ready to do anything for money. The self-seeking stepchildren are driven to distraction by their vain efforts to browbeat Mrs. Savage, but she preserves her equanimity and leads them on a merry chase. At last her friends conspire to get rid of her stepchildren, and through their simple belief in the justice of her cause, they enable Mrs. Savage to carry out her plans. The last scene, a farewell party, is a delightful fantasy where each "guest" in the sanatorium realizes at last some hopeless dream for something he was never able to realize. The dominant mood is high comedy, and the audience is left with a feeling that the neglected virtues of kindness and affection have not been entirely lost in a world that seems motivated at times only by greed and dishonesty.

Wonderful Story

I was introduced to "The Curious Savage" last fall when I played Miss Willie in a college theatre production. I instantly fell in love with all the characters in the story. John Patrick perfectly created characters whom society has labeled as "crazy," who are in fact, fairly close parallels to everyone in the world. The play mixes drama with comedy in a way that honestly leaves you with "warm fuzzies." Every character plays wonderfully off of the others and the lively and interesting dialogue helps suppport the strong plot. It would be as enjoyable a read as it would to perform in and see in production.

A wonderful take on society

Although this play takes place around 1950, it's certainly speaking through the ages. As someone who has read and also performed as Jeff in this play, you can relate the message of greed and want against our society. John Patrick takes a bunch of "Crazy People" and through them and Mrs. Savage and the Savage children shows us that all a human truly wants is to want nothing, but that's not possible. We need to strive for something in society, and sometimes that means being foolish...such as Mrs. Savage is. Everyone can relate to a character in this show, and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to do a show or read a play that is beautiful in it's meaning.

Great Play

I love this play. The more I read it the more I love it. I'm currently rehearsing as Mrs. Savage, we open in March. I love all the characters, and it's so sweet-especially the storyline between Willie and Jeff. There's a lot of comedy, some really good message, a little omance, and some suspense at the end. A great read :)

"Hutus kill Tutsis, then Tutsis kill Hutus--if that's really all there is to it, then no wonder we can't be bothered with it," Philip Gourevitch writes, imagining the response of somebody in a country far from the ethnic strife and mass killings of Rwanda. But the situation is not so simple, and in this complex and wrenching book, he explains why the Rwandan genocide should not be written off as just another tribal dispute.

The "stories" in this book's subtitle are both the author's, as he repeatedly visits this tiny country in an attempt to make sense of what has happened, and those of the people he interviews. These include a Tutsi doctor who has seen much of her family killed over decades of Tutsi oppression, a Schindleresque hotel manager who hid hundreds of refugees from certain death, and a Rwandan bishop who has been accused of supporting the slaughter of Tutsi schoolchildren, and can only answer these charges by saying, "What could I do?" What courage must it have required to research and write this book? And who will read such a ghastly chronicle? Gourevitch, who reported from Rwanda for the New Yorker, faces these questions up front: "The best reason I have come up with for looking more closely into Rwanda's stories is that ignoring them makes me even more uncomfortable about existence and my place in it." The stories are unrelentingly horrifying and filled with "the idiocy, the waste, the sheer wrongness" of one group of Rwandans (Hutus) methodically exterminating another (Tutsis). With 800,000 people killed in 100 days, Gourevitch found many numbed Rwandans who had lost whole families to the machete. He discovered a few admirable characters, including hotelier Paul Rusesabagina, who, "armed with nothing but a liquor cabinet, a phone line, an internationally famous address, and his spirit of resistance," managed to save refugees in his Hotel des Milles Collines in Kigali. General Paul Kagame, one of Gourevitch's main sources in the new government, offers another bleak and consistent voice of truth. But failure is everywhere. Gourevitch excoriates the French for supporting the Hutus for essentially racist reasons; the international relief agencies, which he characterizes as largely devoid of moral courage; and the surrounding countries that preyed on the millions of refugees?many fleeing the consequences of their part in the killings. In 1994, the world was informed of the inexplicable mass killings in Rwanda, in which over 800,000 were killed in 100 days. Gourevitch, a staff writer for The New Yorker, spent over three years putting together an oral history of the mass killing that occurred in this small country. He interviewed the survivors, who told him their horror stories of violence. Most of the killings were done with a machete. Friends killed friends, teachers killed students, and professional workers killed co-workers. The United Nations was slow in reacting to this crisis and refused to classify the incident as genocide. The title of this book comes from a Tutsi pastor's letter to his church president, a Hutu. While this is a powerful book, it sometimes bogs down in the details of Rwandan politics. It is doubtful the average reader will want to pick it up, but the history of this genocide must be told. This book should find itself on the shelves of academic libraries where African history collections are strong.

Amazing Mix of History and Oral Story Telling

In 350 fast-paced pages, Gourevitch explores the painful riddle of human evil, the kind that becomes sanctioned by the leaders so that is tragically becomes embraced by every day "normal" people. He doesn't have any easy answers but he does probe brilliantly into possible causes of the genocide that hit Rwanda in April 1994. Using the oral history of many eye witnesses, Gourevitch weaves story telling and history, especially the role of the Belgians in dividing and conquering by giving special privileges to the Tutsis, resulting in incredible resentment in the hearts of the Hutus who are 85% of Rwanda's population.

There are compelling anecdotes and news stories covered here that as amazing and shocking as they are were never covered in the American press. This alone makes the book valuable. For example, he shows the alleged role of a naturalized American citizen, a minister from Rwanda, who used his religious authority to snare hundreds of Tutsis in his church before they were killed. We learn of this minister's guilty conscience and the FBI's pursuit of him in Texas and Mexico. There are scenarios covered in this book that could make a movie.

Ultimately what ties this book together, a lucid narrative of human evil and the history of political exploitation, is Gourevitch's refusal to surrender to despair and nihilism. He keeps his hope in our humanity by remembering that Hutu girls in a Catholic school would not separate themselves from the Tutsi girls when the Hutu killers demanded they be separated before a killing. The Hutu girls saw themselves as humans first, and if the killers were going to slaughter it would have to be all the girls, which, sadly, is what happened. This act of courage on the part of the Hutu girls provides a burning torch of hope for Gourevitch who writes about this tragic part of history with great humanity.

Ominous Title, Important Subject, Excellent Book

You will have a remarkably better understanding of the Rwandan genocide after you read this book. Gourevitch has done humanity a great service with this fine piece of investigative journalism. The book could have been called "The Slaughter: 100 Days of Hutu Power", but it goes beyond the killing. It successfully puts the puzzle together by looking at the ignition points, outlining the historical context of Rwandan society, debunking the misconceptions, and fingering the enablers. The book also explains various mopping-up efforts and events in the aftermath of genocide, and illuminates the subsequent (and still significant) situation across the border in the eastern Congo.

The abatement of genocide, its causes and consequences, and finding justice afterwards continues to humble the better angels of humankind. Like Bosnia and Darfur, Rwanda illustrates the abysmal results of misguided policies and half-hearted efforts put forth by powerful nations (like the US and France) and international organizations (like the UN). The subject is enormous and will probably surface again in our ever more crowded and cranky world. If we could only nip it in the bud. If not, we will ultimately come face to face with the gruesome monster again.

Stories of a real horror we should all know and remember

I have various views of this book. First, it is a very important account of one of the great tragedies of our time. It upsets me that we still only speak of this tragedy without enough specificity. It is too often just a conversation about the million killed in Rwanda without enough focus on who did the killing. It wasn't just a tribe against another. It was people hacking others to death. This book gets us to some of those individuals - both those murdered and those murdering - and that is the chief reason to appreciate the book and thank Mr. Gourevitch for it.
However, I wish there some images in the book beyond the couple of maps. Yes, Mr. Gourevitch is a fine writer and helps us see with words. But this kind of genocide cries out for photographic documentation. Maybe there isn't any that is appropriate for the book. But I feel the lack just the same.
Finally, this is an important document of the Rwandan terror, but it isn't the final story. It isn't the complete story. That has yet to be written. But I found reading this book a strange sort of nightmare. Everything seems real and it has its own frightening impetus, but it is like a dream where you want things to stop but it won't. It is horrifying and even worse because it all happened to real people and in our time.
And notice how everyone runs from accountability. It seems like everyone wants to pretend someone else did it and when you find someone who actually can't run away from involvement they want to pretend it was some awful force that made people unavoidably crazy and should therefore be forgotten. What hogwash.
Thanks to Mr. Gourevitch for getting these stories in print for us. I hope we burn these stories in our memory.

Michael Bungay Stanier is a leading coaching expert, renowned keynote speaker and the founder and senior partner of Box of Crayons, a company that helps managers and leaders coach in 10 min or less.

The Best Coaching Question in the World

Oh, my.

MEMO TO EVERY PERSON I’VE PRETENDED TO COACH OR MENTOR: I’m so, so sorry! Honest!

Here’s why. This month I was a learner in a seminar with CEOs and board chairs. The highly energetic, wise and witty facilitator was Michael Bungay Stanier, the author of the hot-off-the-press book, “The Coaching Habit.”

At a coffee break, halfway through the three-hour, how-to-coach practicum, I told Stanier that—already—the seminar was on my Top-10 list of best workshops ever attended (and I’ve attended my fair share). Here’s why I gave it a 10:

Three memorable points on coaching:
--BE LAZY: Stop working so hard.
--BE CURIOUS: Stop giving so much advice.
--BE OFTEN: Stop waiting to coach.

And how’s this for role reversal? I’m usually reading snippets from books to my wife. She picked this up first and is still reading—and reminding me—on what effective coaching looks like, especially the “stop giving so much advice” poke-in-the-ribs. Ouch.

Stanier notes that “Harland Howard said every great country song has three chords and the truth. This book gives you seven questions and the tools to make them an everyday way to work less hard and have more impact.” The seven essential questions:
--The Kickstart Question
--The AWE Question
--The Focus Question
--The Foundation Question
--The Lazy Question
--The Strategic Question
--The Learning Question

Stanier says the best coaching question in the world is the AWE question: “And What Else?”

In a four-minute drill with another board chair, I was instructed to ask four questions displayed on the seminar room screen. Stanier says “the first answer someone gives you is almost never the only answer, and it’s rarely the best answer,” so the AWE question is the perfect follow-up.
--Q1: What’s the real challenge here for you?
--Q2: And what else?
--Q3: And what else?
--Q4: So what’s the real challenge here for you?

In just four minutes—it was almost magical. I stuck to the bargain (whew—very hard) and just asked questions of my board chair partner. He responded to each question—and increasingly, in response to “And what else?” he dug deeper and deeper and—BINGO!—answered his own question and solved his own challenge.

Where was this book when I was pretending to coach team members, clients, my son, my grandkids, and many, many others? Yikes!

I’ve underlined gems on almost every page:
--Although coaching is listed as one of the six essential leadership styles in Daniel Goleman’s article, “Leadership That Gets Results” (a Harvard Business Review classic), “it was the least-used leadership style.”
--“You can build a coaching habit” and “You can coach someone in ten minutes or less. And in today’s busy world, you have to be able to coach in ten minutes or less.”
--“Coaching should be a daily, informal act, not an occasional, formal ‘It’s Coaching Time!’ event.”

Stanier’s humor sneaks up on you! As you embark on what he calls the “coaching habit,” he suggests you start somewhere easy:

“If you’re going to manage someone differently, pick someone who might be up for it and is willing to cut you some slack. Or pick someone with whom it’s all going so badly that you’ve got nothing left to lose.”

ANOTHER AHA! The author says there’s a huge difference between coaching for performance—and coaching for development. “Call them forward to learn, improve and grow, rather than to just get something sorted out.”

A gargantuan fan of questions—versus answers—he quotes Nancy Willard: “Answers are closed rooms; and questions are open doors that invite us in.”

“CUT THE INTRO AND ASK THE QUESTION” is another shot over the bow. He notes, “No James Bond movie starts off slowly. Pow! Within 10 seconds you’re into the action, the adrenaline has jacked and the heart is beating faster”—so “cut the preliminary flim-flam” in your coaching process. In 72-point font on page 52, Stanier shouts: “If you know what question to ask,
get to the point and ask it.”

TAME THE ADVICE MONSTER! “We’ve all got a deeply ingrained habit of slipping into the advice-giver/expert/answer-it/solve-it/fix-it mode.” (One study revealed that doctors interrupt patients with advice within 18 seconds. Ditto, perhaps, the rest of us.)

Slow down and take a breath, says Stanier. “Even though we don’t really know what the issue is, we’re quite sure we’ve got the answer they need.”

VP OF BOTTLENECKING. If your employee name badge should read “VP of Bottlenecking,” you must read this book. These seven essential coaching questions will help you coach others, and as Stanier perceptively writes, “Focus on the real problem, not the first problem.”

There are dozens and dozens of more gems in this fresh, easy-to-read format (plus almost 50 full-page quotations—all PowerPoint-worthy). I just ordered eight books for colleagues who are coaching boards and CEOs this year.

An essential book for building better coaching habits

I have to say I’m a fan of Michael’s previous work, so when I heard he had a new book I was eager to see what was on offer. I’m a coach, who is always looking for additional information that will help me to help my clients and there are too many books that are simply a rehash of old stuff.

What struck me with Michael’s work was it was obviously tried and tested and developed with clients. The maps, tools and models he uses offered a range of options to work with for yourself or clients. They were fundamental and yet easy to use and engage with; both elements being crucial for their use in real business coaching or training environments. Michael's approach mirrors Einstein's maxim of "make things as simple as possible, but no simpler" and this book is no exception.

I teach coaching in businesses to managers, many of whom have been of coaching courses where they have been taught coaching models, such as GROW. The sometimes overwhelming focus on some form of model to provide the ‘answer’ is a constant failing in many of the situations I work in. The managers more often than not, lack the ability and framework to ask good consistent questions. They are told to use 'open questions' but have little idea how to structure good open questions to guide a coaching session.

The Coaching Habit provides just that - seven core questions that get to the heart of what the coachee wants to explore. There is no preamble, no padding or over-complicated assessments; these questions offer the opportunity to get straight to the heart of the issue. New coaches and managers often fear this direct approach as it offers control to the coachee and allows them to explore what is of interest to them. If this happens to be an area outside of the coaches or managers expertise they can feel challenged or risk being devalued, so many end up avoiding this approach, to the detriment of the session.

This set of questions allows the coach or manager to openly question the coachee and steer them towards identifying options they can begin to work with. They also firmly offer the opportunity to identify the role for the coach or manager in supporting the person. Ask any successful coach and you'll find that they use these types of questions day in and day out as they provide results, but no one has really taken the time to distil them and write them out, as Michael has in this book. These are the questions I was searching for 20 years ago when I began my coaching journey.

These questions can be supported by additional models or tools but they form the DNA of any coaching session. They hand control to the client and cut to the chase, allowing the client to focus on what’s important and think about actions to take. Make no mistake all coaches (beginner or expert) should read this book, if only to be reminded of the simplicity of coaching and how asking great questions is at the heart of coaching.

In the book, Michael calls the questions the ‘seven essential questions’ others have posted the questions on their reviews so I won't repeat them here. However, it is worth noting that armed with these seven fundamental questions you can make a real difference to a client's journey. The book is structured to engage the reader out of the gate. It's a practical book, aimed at supporting you to deploy the questions in coaching sessions. It's not a book that is full of references and scientific studies - this level of validation is not needed here. Anyone who has coached will immediately understand that you cannot write such a book, if you haven't coached and used these questions time and time again. Any new coaches will find seven great questions that will help them to become a better coach.

Michael uses a quote in the book that reminds the reader of the power of a good question "Without a good question, a good answer has no place to go" - Clayton Christensen. Each question asked in the right way invites the client of a journey of discovery. The questions however, need framing to illicit the maximum response and Michael talks the reader through the best way to deploy these in practice. Throughout the book he reminds you to check your current coaching habits and offers the opportunity to explore new habits to achieve better results for you and your clients. E.g. Michael reminds the reader to encourage the right answer by deploying silence after a question. Many new coaches are seemingly perturbed by using silence but it is a very powerful tool.

I have read hundreds of books in my journey to be a better coach and in my opinion this is an essential coaching book. It’s an instant classic; one which you’ll look back at 20 years from now and realise that not much has fundamentally changed; the questions are still the right questions to ask to be an effective coach. Buy it, read it but above all use it and you’ll make a real positive impact with your clients.

Great quick read for management coaching

I have just finished reading the new book "The Coaching Habit" from Michael Bungay Stanier. This is the first "Management" book I've read to the very end.

It was a quick read. It was pretty straight forward, too. It will not be the last time I read it. The questions presented in the book are easy to remember and I have already put them into practice in my workplace. The order of the questions are put in a natural rhythm and flow. There are extras in each chapter - videos to further explain the concepts - and these are great to reinforce the concept of view it from a different perspective.

Overall a very useful book with lots of great guidance.
