Give it a chance

This author is an alcoholic and I am a bookaholic. When I start reading a book, I compulsively continue it, even if it's God-awful and I hate it. This unfortunate quirk has caused me many a boring hour, but in this case I owe it a debt of gratitude.

Which is a way of saying that the giddy, girly style of writing in the first chapter almost drove me insane. Nothing but my reluctance to abandon a book kept me going. But then a miracle happened and the writing (while informal and still WAY too full of whimsy) settled down. By the second chapter, I was glued to Fisher's weird family diagram (parents, sibling, spouses, step-parents, half-siblings, step-siblings, actresses, actors, singers, agents, artists, beauty queens, and a respected Chinese-American author) and laughing hysterically. Welcome to Hollywood.

This is not a book you read to find out "what happened." Unless you've been living in a cave, you know all about Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher and Carrie Fisher and Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton and Cary Grant and Paul Simon. Their lives may not have been any more troubled or eventful than many private citizens, but they were lived in full view of the public. Old style Hollywood with its carefully groomed stars and jealously guarded publicity may be a thing of the past, but the celebrity machine is still cranking away even more furiously than when Eddie Fisher caused an international scandal by dumping his wholesome wife and marrying Liz Taylor (who soon dumped HIM and married Richard Burton.) Who cares? A lot of people, judging from the ink that was wasted on reporting every detail.

Fisher herself grew up the daughter of two celebrities and became one herself at the tender age of 19 when she played Princess Leia in the Star Wars series. She married a famous singer and then an agent, had a daughter, wrote books, and performed one-woman shows. She also abused drugs and alcohol, attended AA meetings, was in and out of mental hospitals, was diagnosed as bi-polar, and underwent electroshock therapy. You could say she's lived a "full life."

I'm disinterested in the entertainment industry and in celebrities in general, and yet Fisher is an appealing woman. She comes across as brutally honest, especially about her own problems and mistakes. You get the impression of someone who has been through so much craziness that she has both developed an inner toughness and been stripped of the need to hide her defects and weaknesses.

I read this book or a version of it years ago and remembered being impressed. I was happy to find the Kindle version and enjoyed re-reading it. I think it's a valuable story. No, most of us didn't grow up in Beverly Hills, but most of our lives have been touched by addiction and mental illness. In the end, this isn't a story of a celebrity. It's a story of a woman and how she's dealt with her problems.

I was too sad to go to bed so I bought this book ...

I bought this book the day after Carrie's death, about an hour after I learned of her mother's death. I was too sad to go to bed so I bought this book instead. And read it straight through.

I'm glad I did.

"Postcards from the Edge" was my only prior impression of the relationship these two women had. This memoir paints a very different picture. I am sorry the world has lost these two brilliant and beautiful souls, but I am glad for them both that they still have each other.

Upbeat Hollywood tale of survival, light on suffering, long on humor

Not a life-changing memoir but a life-affirming one, with a sharp, honest recounting of actress/author Carrie Fisher's life. In turns funny and bawdy, she never asks for pity, but goes at it like a true recovered addict: all her pain digested into humor, but never denied. I suffer from similar issues and found her believable and illuminating and empowering. There is nothing poetic or soaring about this book, just a fellow journeyman telling their bittersweet tale of survival. And that is more than enough.

For more than three decades, Constance Weaver has been one of the fields' leading voices on literacy topics ranging from the reading process to grammar instruction with writing. Reading Process & Practice first appeared in 1988 and became widely known as the most authoritative, comprehensive, and definitive book of its kind. Excellent source for teachers, parents

WARNING: This book is NOT a grammar handbook. It is NOT a small-minded diatribe against the deplorable state of education today. It is NOT a frivolous "just let the kids write anyway they want" text either.
Instead, Connie Weaver has created a text that reintroduces sanity to the issue of how to teach grammar, and its kin, writing.
This text clearly explains the history of grammar and how it has been taught in history. It addresses how children learn language (and thus grammar)and what does that mean for the way we teach it.
In particular, she share the overwhelming compelling evidence of numerous studies that we can not teach grammar in isolation through drills and worksheets.
What is then WONDERFUL about this text is that she goes on to show what DOES work in teaching grammar to students. She outlines specific lessons and how and why they work. And, of course, she backs it up with some research from the field.
Anyone who plans on being a teacher in elementary or a language arts teacher in the higher grades should be REQUIRED to read this book. Parents who want to know how their children can benefit from grammar instruction combined with whole language ideals (reading and writing) should read this.

Constance Weaver is a saint in tackling grammar in the classroom with theories and useful techniques. For language arts or English literature instructors and teachers, this book is a requirement in understanding and the development of reading and writing skills.

I hate to be negative, but...

I really wanted to like this book, but the writing style is quite poor. It seems like it was written for an 8 year old. The ideas are lacking in content, very superficial. The author is just saying the same thing over and over, ideas are unorganized, just sounds like someone talking with no direction.

Disappointing

I really wanted to like this book but unfortunately I'm really disappointed. Within the first chapter the author used extremely general and repetitive statements. Example "I'm not telling you __________ but what I am saying is _____________" over and and over and over. Maybe I'm just spoiled by the likes of fantastic authors like Brene Brown, but maybe this book was just so unfortunate :(

The Art of Planning -- an OK Game Collection, But Who's the Target Audience?

This is a review for Neil McDonald's first two instructive game collection books.

Neil McDonald has started to pop out game collections at a rate a little faster than he should. His first effort was Chess: The Art of Logical Thinking: From the First Move to the Last, which includes mostly modern games and a few classics, all grouped by opening. His second effort, The Art of Planning in Chess: Move by Move, covers all modern games, grouped by strategic theme. When the writer's notes are mostly prose, as they are in these two books, the writer has a tendency to disconnect the prose with the relevant variations. I felt that McDonald does a better job handling this connection using classic games than he does in using the more modern games. So, in this sense, the first book is a little better and targeted at a slightly lower rated audience. The first book also begins its move-by-move approach in the opening, where the planning book assumes that the reader already has that phase of the game under control.

It doesn't help that modern games are extremely complex affairs. Modern games require precise, razor-sharp calculation, in addition to highly sophisticated strategic thinking. In The Art of Planning in Chess: Move by Move, which covers modern games, McDonald upped the sophistication of his notes a notch, to accommodate a higher-rated audience, but I didn't feel as if the higher-level notes carried the book as well as they should have; and, to be honest, the book isn't really about planning -- it's just a collection of instructive games, with mostly prose notes, like the first book. Don't buy The Art of Planning in Chess if you're looking for a treatise on planning. Buy The Amateur's Mind: Turning Chess Misconceptions into Chess Mastery or How to Reassess Your Chess: The Complete Chess-Mastery Course(Exp. 3rd Edition). Either of these books is more about what you're looking for.

The problem with McDonald's annotation style is that he tends to gloss over important variations. When notes are mostly prose, it's important to include the most important suboptimal variations that your lower-rated readership might want to see. Unlike Chernev's Logical Chess: Move By Move: Every Move Explained New Algebraic Edition or Euwe's Chess Master vs. Chess Amateur, two better books in the move-by-move genre that really get to the heart of what lower-rated players might be thinking, McDonald's work doesn't quite hit the mark.

Both books have typos and comma usage errors, the Art of Planning more so than Logical Thinking. The highlight of the two books is McDonald's extensive annotation to Cheparinov-Ivanchuk, Khanty-Minkyisk, 2005. We are treated to 13 pages of prose that vividly illuminates the positional maneuvering manufactured by these two top players in a delicate line of the Benko Gambit.

In general, McDonald's move-by-move books are good if you've already gone through the more classic books mentioned in this review and are looking for more. The notes will not harm your play, they just don't prove to be inspiring.

you won't regret buying it

i love this book. most chess books of this type, meaning the "heavy on verbal explanation, minimum of variations" aren't so interesting for people over 1600, but this one is. mcdonald uses modern games (up to 2006!) and isn't afraid to talk about more sophisticated positional ideas. not heavy duty study material, but extremely readable and useful stuff. also unusually nice font, cover, paper, typesetting.
my favorite quote: "Now all four units are grouped together in a mutually defending diamond shape."

Best way to get into studying master games

Chess is like a language, you need to see how it is used in a whole variety of situations. Complete games by masters is the best material for study using full immersion into various ideas, plans, techniques all being highly interrelated. This book helps to do it with well-commented games focusing on strategic principles. Many games are very modern and highly instructive; and the verbose style is highly attractive, especially for young players, who wants to grasp the art of studying master games on their own. Using this book, one could feel the presence of very experience coach, who knows what message an inspiring player should get from the games presented.

Of course, there are few other books with a similar approach (teaching by example in complete master games move by move), why is this book so exceptional? The engaging style of discussion, the quality of examples, and a good balance of game analysis with general commentary on strategic principles. This is ideal for player in 1200-1600 range maybe up to 1800. There is a sequel to this book by Neil Mcdonald (Chess Success: Planning After the Opening) from Batsford publisher, featuring the same high quality binding, beautiful page layout that is on par with Gambit books. Boths books are highly recommended for those who needs guidance and motivation to study master games. For those, who mastered these books, the famous book by John Nunn "Understanding Chess: Move by move" is a good next step.

Important reading for anyone with anxiety and their healthcare providers

Anxiety and the use of anti-anxiety medications are rapidly increasing for adolescents--and medication often does not help. What has changed?

Saunders deftly explains that the past model for treating anxiety will do little to resolve anxiety that is caused by a person's environment. He believes the major culprits today are internet porn, general internet addiction, diet (emphasis on gluten) and use of today's hyper-potent marijuana. He carefully supports his arguments with research relating to each. Says Saunders, "All of these factors can produce significant anxiety in people and can also lead to further issues such as cycles of social avoidance, leading to greater use and worsening of the symptoms."

He correctly points out that if a person's anxiety is caused by one of these factors, neither medication nor behavioral therapy (the current protocols) will address the underlying cause. They merely treat symptoms. Only a change of habits will bring the brain back into balance.

This book is a wake-up call for everyone who isn't yet considering the possibility that disorders like anxiety can be the *result* rather than the *cause* of over-consumption. The take-away message here is that if you suffer from anxiety, you may have another, as yet overlooked, option for easing your distress: Stop and ease your way through any withdrawal symptoms. You just might feel better.

This is a timely message clearly presented. Warning: It isn't a book as such, but rather a clear, carefully documented essay. Nevertheless, it's important reading for anyone with anxiety (and their healthcare providers).

Easy read just needs some more clinical citations

Ok needs some clinical citations. It is an easy read, Understanding the basics of diet and social exposure is helpful too. I read it for fun and I am a psychology student and thought it was an easy read. They are some claims that do not cite clinical trials or research. however, it was a fairly good read to get you to think about what we eat. I would recommend this as a side reading but would not cite it in any academic settings

It gets very deep in the weeds on medical terminology. To sum it up: Social media and internet addiction, especially porn, is literally destroying our minds. For your sake and the people you love, insist that the vast majority of your communication be done in person or at least with voice over the phone. And if you watch porn, stop, stop, stop.

About the Author
Jorn Lier Horst was born in 1970, in Bamble, Telemark, Norway. Between 1995 and 2013, when he turned to full time writing, he worked as a policeman in Larvik, eventually becoming head of investigations there. His William Wisting series of crime novels has been extremely successful, having sold more than 500,000 copies in Scandinavia, UK, Germany, Netherlands and Thailand. Dregs, sixth in the series, was published in English by Sandstone Press in 2011, and Closed for Winter, winner of Norway's Booksellers' Prize, in 2012. Closed for Winter was also shortlisted for the prestigious Riverton Prize or The Golden Revolver, for best Norwegian crime novel of the year. In 2013 The Hunting Dogs, successor to Closed for Winter won both the Golden Revolver and The Glass Key, which widened the scope to best crime fiction in all the Nordic countries.

Binge Watching

The word "caveman" might inspire images of everything from an early human to the funny Fred Flintstone. Well, there's nothing funny about the sort of caveman depicted in this novel: a criminal who seeks to evade the police by assuming the identity of a person who will not be missed. That is, the person whose identity is stolen lives alone, has no friends, is a recluse, and so on.

Author Jorn Lier Horst's work centers on veteran Norwegian Police Chief Inspector William Vistig who investigates the murder of an unidentified man. Simultaneously, Vistig's daughter, Line, a journalist, is writing the story of another man not far away who apparently died of natural causes while watching TV. His body was not discovered for four months because he had no family and no friends, so nobody missed him. It seems his body actually rotted in his chair. The TV was still on when someone from the electric company came because of the unpaid bill. Talk about binge watching... Line's story will speculate about how people can live on a crowded planet in virtually complete solitude.

Are these two deaths related? You'll simply have to read this extremely well written book to find out. There's a lot of rich detail. We get to know Vistig and his daughter well. Plenty of cold, snowy Norway. The ending is somewhat melodramatic and formulaic, but not enough so to lose a five star rating.

We long for them to talk to each other...

Norwegian detective William Wisting is investigating the case of a man murdered and hidden under a fir tree on a Christmas tree farm. The body was not found for four months. His journalist daughter, Line Wisting, is writing a human-interest story about a man who died watching television. His body was not found for four months.

Both father and daughter are rather secretive about what they're working on. I found myself thinking, if only they would talk to each other! The reader senses a connection between these investigations, and the suspense builds as father and daughter move blindly towards interconnected and appalling discoveries.

Horn Lier Horst's experience as an investigator gives us a police procedural rich in forensic detail, state-of-the art law enforcement technology, and painstaking detective work. We watch an autopsy by video link. We are exposed to decomposing bodies at crime scenes and macabre human remains. And in this case super agencies are involved, including the FBI. The case is really too big for the small police force of the town of Larvik, yet William and Line Wisting turn out to be pivotal in solving it.

The investigative work is rather slow paced for most of the book, but this intensifies the realism, and the denouement is dramatic and scary. The red herrings are subtle and cleverly introduced. At times we find ourselves suspecting almost everybody. The Arctic temperatures, constant snowfalls and icy blasts of wind add to the ominous feeling of the novel.

I've read just one other novel featuring William Wisting. This book makes me think I should backtrack and read the other books in the series.

Red Herrings A'Plenty

John Pier Horst continues to bring quality work to what I refer to as The Scandinavian Mystery Thriller genre. Without giving away any of the plot, Wisting and his daughter Line are investigating two unrelated deaths, his search for one man's killer and hers, as a journalist, to write an article about the desolate world of those who die completely alone and desperately lonely. Their independent research weaves and circles each other's, seemingly like a DNA image. As the story races to its conclusion, I found myself like-minded about each potential and "obvious" suspect. I continued to dig back through Kindle 's "Search Book" to acknowledge that Wisting had his man. There are, indeed, red herrings a'Plenty, and The Caveman is a great read for those already invested in the genre and for those who simply like a great mystery thriller.

DR. DOBSON CLARIFIES SOME EMOTIONAL MISCONCEPTIONS

James Clayton "Jim" Dobson, Jr. (born 1936) is a psychologist, radio broadcaster, and author, and founder in 1977 of Focus on the Family (FOTF), which he led until 2003. He currently hosts the radio program "Family Talk with Dr. James Dobson." He has written many other books, such as Straight Talk to Men and Their Wives; What Wives Wish Their Husbands Knew About Women, Dare to Discipline, Dr. Dobson Answers Your Questions, etc.

He wrote in the Introduction to this 1980 book, "EVERY river of emotion running deep within the human spirit has the capacity of overflowing its banks and flooding the mind with its rampaging waters. That is why I have written the pages of this book. Our purpose has been to fortify the banks of those rivers with scriptural truth and psychological understanding." (Pg. 12) He adds, "The God who created the vast resources of the universe is also the inventor of the human mind. His inspired words of encouragement guarantee us that we can live above our circumstances." (Pg. 14)

But he clarifies, "I have no desire to return our culture to the formality of yesterday, when father was a marble statue and mother couldn't smile because her corset was too tight. But if our grandparents represented one extreme of emotional repression, today's Americans have become temperamental yo-yos at the other. We live and breathe by the vicissitudes of our feelings, and for many, the depression of the 'lows' is significantly more prevalent than the elation of the 'highs.' Reason is now DOMINATED by feelings, rather than the reverse as God intended." (Pg. 10)

He asserts, "The message is loud and clear to me: God will not necessarily save our children as a reward for our own devotion! Christianity is not inherited by the next generation. We must do our early homework." (Pg. 37) Later, he also suggests, "Anyone who believes that God guarantees a successful marriage to every Christian is in for a shock... He will not answer a specific request for guidance on this all-important decision. Certainly, His will should be sought in such a critical matter... However, I do not believe that God performs a routine matchmaking service for everyone who worships Him." (Pg. 62)

He states, "love is not simply a feeling of romantic excitement; it goes beyond intense sexual attraction; it exceeds the thrill at having 'captured' a highly desirable social prize. These are emotions that are unleashed at first sight, but they DO NOT CONSTITUTE LOVE. I wish the whole world knew that fact. These temporary feelings differ from live in that they place the spotlight on the one experiencing them... these emotions are selfish in the sense that they are motivated by our own gratification.... Such a person has not fallen in love with another person; he has fallen in love with love! And there is an enormous difference between the two." (Pg. 56)
