Leah Gallo is an author, photographer, and book editor who has worked closely with filmmaker Tim Burton since 2007. She wrote and edited the award-winning tome The Art of Tim Burton and Big Eyes:The Film, The Art. Holly C. Kempf is a graphic designer and book editor who has been working with director Tim Burton since 2007. My Daughter was Thrilled to receive this book!

I bought this for my Adult daughter who is a huge Miss. Peregrine's book series lover!
She's a huge Tim Burton fan as well and as soon as she found out about this new Hardcover book chronicles every step in the making of the film—from script development and casting to concept art, set design, costumes, visual effects, etc...She messaged me the link and said She NEEDED this book!!
Little did she know, I went right online and ordered it, so this morning when UPS came she was shocked when she opened the box!
Filled with exclusive interviews, on-set photography, and special introductions by Tim Burton and Ransom Riggs, this deluxe hardcover volume is a terrific gift for peculiars of all ages!
I have also read the Miss.Peregrine's book series and we both are really looking forward to the movie coming out in the next month or so.
The book is well written and illustrated. She's a Hardcover only girl, so she's in love!

Transcendent Beauty

An incredible array of photographs and accompanying text. Thoughtfully curated and meticulously detailed. A must have for any Burton collector, photo fiend, and movie buff. It's a richly colorful, beautifully printed and bound book, at home on any coffee table or private collection.

When the German armies were forced to retreat in 1944, Finland managed to conclude a separate peace with the USSR – uniquely, without being forced to accept renewed Russian occupation. This book details the organisation, uniforms and equipment of this remarkable force.

Excellent Addition to Elite Series

Finland at War 1939-45, # 141 in Osprey's Elite series, is an excellent introduction to the role of the Finnish Army in the Second World War. Authors Philip Jowett and Brent Snodgrass demonstrate a firm grip of this subject and provide a wealth of useful and hard-to-find information on the Finns. This volume belongs on the bookshelves of anyone seriously interested in the Eastern Front.

The opening section spends about 12 pages outlining the chronology of the three wars that Finland fought in the period 1939-45; the 1939-40 Winter War and 1941-44 Continuation War against the Soviet Union and the 1944-45 Lapland War against the Germans. However the chronology section actually has a fair amount of detail and provides a good introduction to the subject. The heart of the volume lies in the 25-page section which discusses the organization of the Finnish army, covering all the major branches as well as paramilitary formations such as the Civil Guard and Foreign Volunteers. A brief section discusses tactics, including the use of "motti" encirclement attacks and snipers. A final section discusses weapons, including small arms, machineguns, anti-tank weapons and artillery (unfortunately, mortars were omitted). Overall, there is a wealth of information in this thin volume and it is one of the better of Osprey's Elite titles.

Eight pages of color plates by artist Raffaele Ruggeri depict the Finnish military and para-military forces from 1939-45. The photographs in the volume are also very good and most have not been printed in English-language books before. Perhaps the only area that gets a bit skimped on is in the areas of training and higher staff functions at corps-level, but this is understandable given the size restraints. Overall, a superb volume.

Great overview

This book is very well written and easy to read. It gives a very good overview of the Finnish military during WWII. If you don't know about heroic little Finland, and their fight for survival against Russia, then you are missing some great inspirational history. I consider this book a must-have for the Finnish military history buff.

May's work is historically interesting, as German boys' favorite reading from the 1880s to the 1930s. But the plotlines are full of wildly implausible heroics on the part of the narrator and these books aren't worth the modern reader's time, except to compare any one of them to Edgar Rice Burroughs. And this is a comparison in which May fails miserably.

Im neuen Rothmaler-Atlasband: Gef��pflanzen sind mehr als 3000 Habituszeichnungen von Wildpflanzen der Flora Deutschlands enthalten. Jede Pflanze ist wissenschaftlich exakt und ma�stabsgetreu mit mehreren charakteristischen Details dargestellt. Pfeile weisen auf wichtige Unterscheidungsmerkmale zwischen �hnlichen Arten hin. Vegetative Merkmale, auch solche, die im Textband nicht beschrieben werden, erleichtern die Bestimmung im bl�tenlosen Zustand. Die genauen Wuchsformdarstellungen illustrieren die M�glichkeiten der vegetativen Vermehrung und Ausbreitung. Angaben zur Gr��e, Lebensform, Bl�tezeit und zum Naturschutz erg�nzen die Abbildungen.

F�r diese stark bearbeitete 12. Auflage wurden mehr als 210 Pflanzenarten v�llig neu gezeichnet und weitere 60 bereits bestehende Zeichnungen erg�nzt oder korrigiert. Alle Legendentexte wurden kritisch durchgesehen und aktualisiert.

Ashenden was particularly admired by Raymond Chandler, and that is what first interested me in it. It is the story, based on Maugham's own experience, of a British spy in the first world war. The 'story' is more a series of separate episodes, and I can easily imagine why it appealed to Chandler -- as well as the laconic detachment of the writing, there is almost a feel of Hammett here and there, notably the episode of the Hairless Mexican. Much of the action centres round Geneva, a city I personally like, and there is a peculiar fascination in the voyage of the lake-steamer going in and out of the war-zone as it alternates between Switzerland and France. This kind of spy did not have much in common with the heroes of Len Deighton or John Le Carre -- the job reminds me more of how J K Galbraith described the life of an ambassador, ninety percent boredom and ten percent panic, like being an airline pilot. It has its grim side too as you would expect. One of the most memorable pieces is the story of the traitor Grantley Caypor. Some years ago Ashenden was serialised on the BBC, with Caypor superbly played by Alan Bennett. What that production did not even try to reproduce was what happened at the moment of Caypor's execution, unforgettable in Maugham's cold prose.

The Father of Modern Spies

Worth a read for historical reasons as it is one of (if not the) first modern spy novels. That said, it is very far away from the intricately woven page-turners featuring brainy CIA types bedding winsome females that we tend to think of as being sp novels today. Maugham served in the British intelligence corps in WWI and drew heavily upon his own experiences in writing this book, indeed the epynonymous hero is a well-known writer by profession. Each chapter is almost its own vignette, illustrating some experience or aspect of the intelligent agent's life. The theme is that the agent's life is marked by dullness and inability to know the "big picture." Ashenden is based in Switzerland and undertakes his assignments (none of which involve gunplay or physical prowess) dutifully, yet the reader feels, with a certain ambivalence. There is one especially haunting scene where, for once, Ashenden witnesses firsthand, the repercussions of his actions.

A Master of Characterization

"Ashenden" by Somerset Maugham is one of the grandfathers of the spy fiction genre. In reality, it's not really a novel, but eight short stories featuring Ashenden, a novelist-secret agent during WWI. Each story is unique, some focusing on the violence and duplicity of the secret world (e.g., "The Hairless Mexican," "Guilia Lazzari," and "The Traitor"). Others are less about espionage than quiet character studies (for example, the final story, "The Sanatorium," has nothing whatever to do with spying, but is set in a tuberculosis sanatorium and--though a it's a bit sentimental--is a brilliant character study of the patients and, in particular, of those who find love in the midst of adversity). I found it deeply touching.

I must admit this the first I've read of Maugham and was impressed with his ability in a single paragraph to get to the very essence of a character (perhaps the best example being his vivid characterization of the funny, but tragic Mr. Harrington in "Mr. Harrington's Washing"). Each of Maugham's characters are distinct and finely drawn.

Maugham at one time analyzed himself as in the first rank of the second rate writers. He may not be Dostoevsky or Cervantes, but he was a fine writer who deserves to be read-I think it's more accurate to say he's in the second row of the first rate writers.

I only found out about "Ashenden" from one of the terrific essays of Michael Dirda (the reviewer for the Washington Post) in which he constantly brings to light lost classics.

"Ashenden" is readable, convincing, and (despite its WWI setting) relevant to the events of today. The secret and desperate world of war and espionage will be with us forever it seems; Maugham's themes are timeless and his writing is a model of clarity.

This is a lost classic that should be read.
