Grade 6 Up Freedman's book has two levels of appeal: that of the wonderfully conceived and vividly executed paintings (full-color reproductions of stunning paintings by such they-were-there artists as George Catlin, Karl Bodmer, Albert Bierstadt, uncluttered by inclusion of photographic every-detail), and that of an informative, accessible text. The title may by itself mislead some, as Freedman presents not a story or description of one hunt but descriptions of the many ways that buffalo hunts were madeby Indians, and later by the whites whose ferocious, firearm slaughter of the ``shaggies''as they were calledbrought the species to near extinction. This is superior to two recent picture books on the general subject of buffalo: Dorothy Hinshaw Patent's Buffalo: the American Rison Today (Clarion, 1986) and Cary B. Buffalo Hunt by R. Freeman: A review

Author, Russell Freeman, writes an informational (nonfiction) book targeting grades 3 - 7 about the interdependence of the Plains Indian Tribes and the North American Bison. This book documents a way of life few non-Indian people were privileged to see. The bison shaped the culture of these tribes, the tribes usually killed only what they needed and used all parts of the animal. The various tribes of the plains husbanded the bison herds and the land on which they grazed to insure the survival of this essential source of food and shelter. The buffalo hunt was accompanied by supplication to the spirits and shaman of the tribes and was participated in by all, though only men killed buffalo. The job of others was to clean the kill and cure the meat and hides. The author describes more than one hunting technique. Also, he explains how the Indians developed into skillful horsemen as they evolved from hunting on foot to the use of wild horses.
The slaughter of bison populations as whites encroached upon and gradually took over Indian lands resulted in the end of a way of life and the near annihilation of the Plains Indian Tribes in the 50+ years from around 1830 to 1888.
The book is illustrated with reproductions of original paintings and drawings of the period by artists such as George Catlin and Karl Bodmer who were adventurer-artists traveling alone, or nearly so, through regions that only a few fur trappers and traders had seen before this time.
Freeman has crafted a book with a balanced combination of illustration and information. His book would surpass the most rigorous standards for great nonfiction. It presents information objectively and without bias or opinion and uses beautiful works of art for illustration - the art of both the white and the Indian, from the period under scrutiny. It explains a way of life that has been lost yet does not belabor the point, marginalize the people, or sentimentalize the topic. I would recommend this book highly. It could be used for art projects in schools as well as for factual writing assignments. The author has written other respected informational books for children, e.g., Lincoln: A photobiography, and another about the Wright brothers.

Sensitive, well-written book full of anecdotes and wisdom

Carolyn Martinez has a knack for taking sensitive painful subjects and, through a combination of exceptionally clear writing and good journalism, making them seem both natural and surmountable. Her previous book, Inspiring IVF Stories was a clear eyed and anecdotally rich resource for people wanting to navigate around the often complex world of IVF. Martinez’ new book, Finding Love Again, is another book full of stories about people who have attempted to develop another relationship after at least one long-term one has ended. Though the stories are presented without too much editorial interruption, Martinez provides a kind of cumulative wisdom as the book progresses, building up to practical tips to go along with such a wealth of anecdotal advice that it’s hard not to feel like it’s entirely possible to find true love, at any age, no matter how badly a previous relationship has failed.

The book explores both positive and negative relationships, uncovering pitfalls, common errors, and reasons why relationships do and don’t work in order to uncover what it takes to build a relationship that has harmony and longevity. Though the majority of the book is built around stories, the case studies are bolstered by an opening interview with relationship educator Robyn Donnelly, and Martinez’ own extensive research. It’s quite interesting to see the connection between real-life behavior/patterns and theory. Each story ends with a discussion and set of dot points by Martinez, teasing out the key learning from the story, along with a final summary of what works, and what doesn’t in terms of longevity and happiness.

There are twenty-one stories in all – each completely different. Some involve a very smooth transition from one relationship to the next, with relatively little pain, while others involve tremendous difficulties—some tragic, some involving multiple unhappy relationships, breakups, losses and bad dates. Ages vary too, spanning a range from thirty something to seventy something. The stories are sometimes told from both partners’ points of view – as was the case with Inspiring IVF Stories, which also adds to the depth and sense of perspective. All of the stories are told with sympathy and a great deal of honesty, in the storyteller’s own voice, and with a lot of analysis of the mistakes they made. Not all of the stories are happy ones. Some end up unresolved, but with perhaps a newfound sense of self and perspective.

Though I didn’t warm to every interviewee, many stories are quite moving. I was particularly moved by Andrea’s story. In a follow-up letter nine months after her initial interview, Andrea remarks on Martinez’ mode of narrative: “but to hold it in this sacred space of empathy, understanding and kindness, and then to tell it…” This is what Martinez does throughout the book. Finding Love Again is a valuable manual on how to ensure that a second relationship is sustainable, but it is also a series of stories told with empathy. Even if you aren’t looking for love, there are lessons to be learned here. The book finishes with seven self-reflection exercises, tips for combating loneliness, and a toolkit for assessing your own personal values – a common theme throughout the book.

As for me, while it’s true that I’m now going into the twenty-sixth year of my first marriage, there are still lessons to be learned in Finding Love Again about give-and-take, about maintaining a sense of newness and care in the face of the daily grind, and about paying attention to the other person in the face of all of life’s distractions, especially if you’re juggling family, work and all-encompassing hobbies, as we all are.

Finding Love Again, is a well-written, sensitive and very easy to read book full of stories, ideas, and advice on how to find love, and more importantly I think, how to keep love strong for the duration.

Finding Love gives you hope. Hope is a powerful entity, and being able to show support to those whose hope has faltered is a remarkable thing.
Carolyn Martinez has written a real and honest book, sharing real experiences about real people about this thing we all know as love.
Martinez’s style of writing is wise and inspirational, and gives her beloved audience members the opportunity to think and consider their own personal journeys, to relate to other people, and to show they are not alone.
Finding Love inspires.
It motivates.
It encourages.
It gives you hope.

Educational and entertaining...

Since reading this book I have been motivated into finding love again and this is after being single for over 10 years. I’ve already been on two dates and have totally changed my approach to dating. I now feel rejuvenated and know that at 53 I am going to find love again.. Thanks for writing this Carolyn, educational and entertaining, I am already recommending it to all and sundry. About the Author

Richards J. Heuer Jr. is best known for his path breaking book, Psychology of Intelligence Analysis, which is used throughout the Intelligence Community. Retired from the CIA, Mr. Heuer has worked with the Intelligence Community in various roles for over five decades. He has won multiple awards for his research and writing, including the CIA Seal Medallion for development of the Analysis of Competing Hypotheses technique.

Randolph H. Pherson, President of Pherson Associates, LLC, has spearheaded teaching and developing analytic techniques and critical thinking skills in the Intelligence Community. He served for 28 years in the Intelligence Community, last serving as National Intelligence Officer for Latin America. Rather than an etherial, academic reflection on why analysis is relevant, or 'what is the role of intelligence analysis', or a mathmatical treatise on Games and Decisions, this is a working reference and practical guide to structured analytical techniques. Although the title specifies "for intelligence analysis", the methodology is applicable to problem sets that are only partially or non-quantifiable, and especially applicable to issues that are ambiguous and where only incomplete information is available.

In many ways, this is the sequel to Psychology of Intelligence Analysis, also by Richard Heuer. Where "Psychology of Intelligence Analysis" focused on analytical biases, with a limited discussion of rigorous approaches to intelligence analysis, "Structured Analytic Techniques" approaches similar issues from a more pragmatic direction. As valuable as the discussion of cognative biases is, the comprehensive set of analystical tools in "Structured Analytic Techniques" does more (when applied) to mitigate many of the biases than mere knowledge of their existance, and the analytical techniques will counteract many biases, even when those biases have not been identified.

Of particular interest is the emphasis on analytical teams and group analysis, both the strengths and weaknesses, and methods for maximizing the strengths and mitigating the weaknesses.

The general pattern of the overall methodology (and chapter titles) is -
-Decomposition and Visualization - to break the information into small elements and arrange these elements (often from diverse source) into a rational pattern.
-Idea Generation - brain storming, but rigorous brain storming that encourages a broad range of perspectives and invites the dissenting and minority opinions to be heard.
-Scenarios and Indicators - develop alternate courses for events to unfold in and the signals that a specific course has been taken.
-Hypothesis Generation and Testing - coming up with explainations given the available information, and figuring out things that will confirm or deny the explaination. Not a trivial problem, but one that is often done in a haphazard fashion. The section on deception detection is especially interesting, and is something not normally addressed outside of intelligence circles.
-Assessment of Cause and Effect - although it seems obvious, the common analytical failure of mirror-imaging necessitates a direct check on the most basic aspects of an analysis.
-Challage Analysis - where 'assessment of cause and effect' is something of a sophisticated fact check, the 'challange analysis' phase is a methodical and critical review of the logic and critical premises and assumptions of an analysis.
-Conflict Management - a chapter expressly about leveraging disagreement in analysis. This is an especially valuable chapter as most earlier works have been written with an emphasis on individual analysts rather than groups and teams.
-Decision support - the ultimate purpose of intelligence and many other kinds of analysis. In the political and military realms (in a democratic nation) the purpose of intelligence is to give leadership the information (both current and predictive) to make decisions. Everything done up to this point is irrelevant if it cannot be effectively communicated to the individuals making the decision and bearing the responsibility for that decision.

And finally...
- Evaluation of Structured Analytic Techniques - Here, I think the intent was good, but it would be easy to use this to justify personal peeves. Techniques are only as good as the users and their rigor. If a technique is used sloppily, the technique isn't bad, the user is. Thankfully, this was much more of a "way forward" than specific methodologies.

In a comb binding with a heavy weight cover and tabs, this is meant for the desk of conference table, not to gather dust on a bookshelf. The range of techniques, the approaches to selecting and using the techniques within a structured methodology, and clarity of this book make it a worthwhile investment for professionals in many fields. A little more depth in the practice of some of the techniques might have been a plus, but the framework of every technique and references for more detailed instruction are provided.

This is the definitive work on the subject, and will remain a timely and valuable text for decades.

One of my required college textbooks. An excellent book in that it lays out the various structured analytic techniques in a clear and easily understood manner. The book is also tabbed which makes it easier to find the material or section that you need.

Excellent Field Manual

I rated this book as a five stars because I have been able apply the content in real world situations and improve my performance. This is an excellent compilation of analysis techniques for decision making. This book is billed as a book for the intelligence community but I find it just as applicable for common business or project decisisons. I would describe this as more of a tool box of techniques that can be utilized to flesh out hidden issues, biases and/or assumptions. Each technique is described, however to effectively utilize the technique you may have to go to the original sources to get additional detail and guidance. This is not a criticism because if each technique was explained fully, you'd have a book that was 900+ pages. For a flavor of the content of this book check out this link:

Wonderful sweet romance

This is a wonderfully sweet small town romance and the first book I have read by this author. It definitely won't be my last. Ms. McCoy has a great writing style and her characters are well developed and interesting. Adeline and Sinclair are both involved in family commitments. Adeline is having to run the family chocolate store while her father recuperates from an injury. Try as she might she can't get the fudge her family is so well known for exactly right. Sinclair is back in Benevolence helping is brother clear out and clean up the old family home. His relationship with his father was never good and he had never planned to return but when his brother called what could he do. The attraction between these two is strong and the sweet relationship that develops between them is wonderful.

This is a book I would definitely recommend.

Shirlee McCoy has written beautiful book, that will touch your heart.

Sweet Haven, a four-star romance read is simply Sweet. Written by Shirley McCoy, is small town romance has no violence, and besides some kissing there is not sex scenes. This story is written in alternating person narration and you are truly able to know both main characters.

Adeline, never left her small town of Benevolence, Washington like her sisters had. Her grandfather is hospitalized and she is taking over his business while he heals, the family store called Chocolate Haven which is very well known for its amazing fudge. Her adorable dog Tiny, her small home, and guarding her heart after Adam tore it apart is the life Addie wants. Her excitement of her life is Tiny getting out and causing trouble all over town, and Addie is okay with that. But now there is someone now renting her grandfather’s apartment, and Addie can't stop thinking of him. Sinclair is returning home, to the town he escaped from to help his brother restore his home for his brother’s wife who is expecting a child. Sinclair wants to get the house done and out of the town that pitied him all his life, as the poor Jefferson boy whose fathers drinking killed his mother and his himself. Quickly Sinclair is learning this small town holds many buildings needing to be restored, learning his brother isn't the lazy guy he thought he was, and learning that Addie isn't the little red head girl he remembers. The chemistry Sinclair and Addie have is a page turner, but Sinclair must find a way to break down the walls Addie has built around her heart.

This small town love story is sweet and cute. The only thing I wish is that we had one scene with Addie and Sinclair together sexually, as each time they are together, you felt the passion and attraction they both felt for each other. the sisters make a brief appearance in the book as well as Addie's mother. I am very excited to read the rest of the series, and really hope Addie's mom gets her book, she deserves her happy ending. Shirlee McCoy has written beautiful book, that will touch your heart.

4 Strong stars for an enjoyable romance read.

Love served with chocolate is at the heart of Sweet Haven by Shirlee McCoy. New series with a new town, Benevolence, Washington. Addie and Sinclair have come back to the town to help family members. I loved how their relationship progressed normally with an added bit of suspense ingredient. I thought this was truly a come home to love story.

Since this is the first in the series, there is the image building of the town. Then a whole cast of town people along with several strong supporting characters. It is all done so that it fits nicely into getting to know Addie and Sinclair.

The main characters, Addie and Sinclair are characters to love even with their flaws. Not glancing flaws but not perfect either. I enjoyed the normalcy of these two, thinking that they bring out the best in each other. I hope to stay up to date with them in more of this delightful new series.

The New Lives of the World's Oldest Book

Actually, the I Ching is not the world's oldest book - some from Egypt, Babylonia, and even the Chinese Classic of Poetry are older. But it is something more important: the world's oldest book which has been in continuous use, an honor it shares with the earliest books of the Hebrew Old Testament. Most of the JudeoChristian Bible however is almost 1,000 years more recent than the I Ching whose earliest parts were recorded about 800 BCE, according to current scholarly opinion. The I Ching is also the all time best selling book published by Princeton University Press and consistently ranks quite high on Amazon's rankings.It is one of the books that everyone should read.How has the I Ching has been able to stimulate the imaginations of the ancient Chinese and modern Westerners equally? There is a mystery about this;one's first contact is likely to be a bit startling since much of the work is terse and obscure.One is inspired to meditate on what the Changes meant to readers three milennia ago and what its allure is today.
There is no better way to discover the extremely wide range of ideas stimulated by the Changes than this Annotated Bibliography.There are entries for all the established authorities such as Edward L. Shaughnessy and Richard Rutt but equal place is given to those who are distinctly unorthodox, even bizarre, in their views. Nearly all entries are annotated and in an objective manner.Doctoral disserations, journal articles and reviews are included.The effort that has gone into this is staggering and all interested in the Changes must be extremely grateful to the authors.
If you have any interest in the I Ching whether as a scholar of ancient China or for divination, or as significant element in the transmission of Eastern culture to the West, this work should be at the top of your list for related reading. A bibliography may sound as if it would be dry but the annotations are fascinating and give a idea of the range of thought regarding the I Ching which can be obtained in no other way.
Highly recommended.

About the Author

Louis E. Janus has taught Norwegian at St. Olaf College and the University of Minnesota. He is president of the Norwegian Researchers and Teachers Association of North America and coordinator of the Less Commonly Taught Languages Project through the Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition at the University of Minnesota.

Great first book!

I'd been checking out the range of "Learn Norwegian" books that were offered here on Amazon, and I was glad to have finally chosen this one. Having no prior experience with the language, I found that this book (along with the textbook of the same series, this is just a supplement) work really well for me! I plan on buying the Intermediate level as well when I've finished with this one. Afterward, I'll just hope that Rosetta Stone adds a Norwegian program!

Beginner's Norwegian workbook is a must-have for those with the textbook, just learning or rehashing the language. Goes beyond what is in the text to augment the learning process and help it "sink in."

It's good so far but

The books seems good, but it's difficult to do the listening parts because there are no tapes to listen to unless you have the teacher's guide. It has exercises based on the other book and that's great. So far it's good for written form
