About the Author
Sam Hill is professor emeritus of Spanish and Portuguese and has taught all levels of both languages at California State University, Sacramento over a 35 year career. His is the primary author of the first two editions of this text. He continues to travel and on occasion is called back to teaching.

Mar�a Mayberry is associate professor of Spanish at California State University, Sacramento and author of several scholarly articles in Hispania. She has a continuing research interest in language acquisition. She teaches graduate seminars in comparative grammars and applied linguistics.

Edward Baranowski, is professor of Spanish at California State University, Sacramento, and teaches all levels of Spanish. He has translated several texts written by early Spanish explorers in California. He teaches graduate seminars in dialectology and history of the language.

A must-have for students and teachers

What a thrill to learn of the third edition of Dr. Hill’s text! He was my professor at CSU, Sacramento in the mid-70’s, and we used his handouts preparatory to the first two published editions of the text. The books have been of invaluable help to me as a high school and community college instructor of both Spanish and ESL over a thirty-five year career, and it is my pleasure to review the co-authored third edition. It is, in a word, splendid!

As was the case with the previous editions, the updated and expanded third edition is an inventory of the major morphological and syntactical contrasts between Spanish and English. The morphological segments deal with the grammatical forms (verbal, adjectival, etc.) of both languages, and the syntactical presentations present the basic word-order and structural elements of the two. Some helpful phonetic information appears, such as the three pronunciations for final “-s” in regular English plurals (cat>cats, dog>dogs, class>classes) and third person, singular present tense English verbs (sit>sits, drag>drags, touch>touches). Also treated are the three possible renditions of “-ed,” for the English regular past tense. Similarly, the authors present the phonetics of the Spanish consonant/vowel combinations as these apply across the language, especially its verbal system.

The third edition like the previous two was written for students essentially fluent in both languages and with considerable academic training in each. Potential teachers and/or translators of Spanish and English would find the book especially useful. For example, of particular interest to the English speaker are such entries as Chapter 6 (A Question of Aspect: The Spanish Imperfect-Preterite Contrast), Chapter 7 (The Spanish Indicative and Subjunctive Moods) or perhaps Chapter 10 (English To Be vs. Spanish Ser, Estar and Haber). Likewise, the authors direct such Chapters as these specifically to the Spanish native: Chapter 8 (English Modal Auxiliaries and Their Spanish Equivalents) and Chapter 9 (English Phrasal Verbs). But most of the 27 chapters deal with inter-lingual contrasts essential to both kinds of language learners as the titles indicate in Chapter 5 (The Comparative Syntax of Statements and Questions), Chapter 11 (English and Spanish Personal Pronouns) and Chapter 17 (Conditional Sentences and Unreal Comparison). Four carefully elaborated appendices follow the chapters: I. English Irregular Verbs, II. Spanish Irregular Verbs, III. Verb Tense Terminology and IV. Verbal Types and Usages. The index was carefully worked-out, and I usually found everything I looked for at a quick glance. New to the third edition is a meticulously prepared Glossary of Grammatical Terms, cross-referenced (as are numerous items in the text itself), presenting short, to-the-point definitions with examples of entries as basic as “noun” and “adjective” through all the tenses of both languages, to rather complicated concepts like “clause,” “complex sentence,” “sequence of tenses,” and “counter-factual conditional sentences.”
The glossary, I feel, is an especially valuable addition to this edition, for as teachers can attest, modern-day students lack solid preparation in grammatical terminology.

The exercises remain a fundamental feature of the new edition. All employ standard, everyday spoken English and Spanish usages. My opinion is that some of the more elevated levels of language might well have been included, like those found in newspapers and editorials. Unfortunately, the exercise key attendant to the second edition was omitted from the third.The authors’ justification for not including a key was to me unconvincing. I would urge them to consider preparing a key as an ancillary to the text, the publisher willing.

Interspersed throughout the chapters you find notes as mere additions or clarifications to the text at hand, comments on colloquial usages and regional variation, language history and current research on various topics. I found the over-all formatting of the text very appealing to the eye, consistent, and rather artistically thought out. It alone contributes greatly to the text’s attractiveness.

I was particularly impressed with how well some of the most important topics of the previous editions were updated and expanded. The old preterite/imperfect contrast of Spanish was thoroughly re-worked with the addition of a whole new component, that of lexical aspect. The English equivalencies of these problematic Spanish oppositions was also put in clearer focus. The Spanish subjunctive/indicative, always a real burden for the English speaker, was greatly improved with special attention given to the often very slight differences of meaning or speaker intention when one or the other mood is used. This is especially true for noun clauses following main verbs of opinion or reaction (“No me parece justo que le das/des tanta ayuda”). The authors came up with a novel approach to verbs traditionally called “reflexive,” and made the difficult and multi-faceted meanings and usages of English modal auxiliaries (“can, could, will, would, may, might, should, must, be supposed to, had better, have to”, etc.) more complete and clear, not only to Spanish speakers, but to English natives as well. The topic of Spanish noun gender received an entirely new and expanded treatment in light of new linguistic scholarship. Clearly the assistance of the two co-authors resulted in such improvements in the text.

A reviewer of the second edition noted that that text seemed more geared toward the English speaker learning Spanish than the reverse. I find that still to be the case, at least to some degree, in the third. Any future edition could use an considerably expanded English component, explaining in particular such issues in partitive usage (Chapter 19) as, “Do you need some help? > No, I don’t need any help” and the syntax of English adverbs of time, place, frequency, etc., always difficult for Spanish speakers, for example, “We often see people fail...” converting to adverbs “of negative bias” with two possibilities, “We rarely see people fail.../Rarely do we see people fail...”

This book is a “must” for students of Spanish or English, for teachers of either or both languages and for translators. The authors wrote it especially to meet your practical needs. Pretty much everything you want to find out about how both languages actually work is there, complete with an inventory of where the two are the most similar and where the most divergent. The various editions of the “Bilingual Grammar” gave me a solid and useable control over the essentials of the two grammatical systems, and these understandings have helped me in my personal language development and more importantly, in the teaching of both. Those texts were always within easy reach. You really owe it to yourself and your students to check out this third edition. I predict that you and it will become very close indeed.

An indispensable book for Spanish teachers and others.

Anyone who wants a thorough understanding of English and Spanish grammar, as well as the relationship between the two languages, should have this book. The audience is three-fold: 1. advanced students of Spanish, 2. anyone who is teaching or may teach Spanish as a foreign language, and 3. anyone involved in translating to or from Spanish. This is not a book for beginning or intermediate students. This third revision of a very successful and widely used textbook adds several features and in general is superior to the previous versions. The authors have divided their presentation into 27 chapters covering all the major difficulties which a native speaker or English or Spanish might have when learning the other language. The chapters include all the usual problem areas for English native speakers: to be vs. ser and estar, the Spanish preterite—imperfect contrast, and pronoun usage. But they have also described the problems that native Spanish speakers may have when learning English: phrasal verbs (e. g. eat up, burn down, pass out), the somewhat similar verb plus preposition constructions (e. g. ask for, listen to), and the imperative systems.

Each chapter includes a comprehensive list of examples which illustrate the point under discussion. For example, chapter 10 treats a commonly studied crux, the uses of ser and estar, as well as the contrast between Spanish verb haber and the English “there is.” The authors' discussion goes far beyond what is typical in beginning and intermediate texts: they list 8 exclusive uses of ser and 5 of estar, with several examples under each; they describe the use of the two verbs with predicate adjectives (e.g the difference between es bueno and est� bueno), with a two-page long list—with examples—of adjectives which may be encountered after either verb; and they even describe the difference between the ser-passive and the estar-passive, a relatively rare contrast. The chapter continues with a thorough description of the differences between hay, as in “hay un castillo,” and “there is/are,” and concludes with a translation practice exercise of 26 sentences, half English and half Spanish. The previous edition contained at the end a key to the exercises; this third edition contains no key. The authors believe that this book should be used, not for self-study, but with an instructor or other colleagues. The authors may be mistaken in this belief, since an individual enthusiast might in fact go through this book for its intrinsic interest or use it as a reference manual. A key could perhaps be issued as a separate volume.

The book deals almost entirely with grammar, specifically syntax. It does not address pronunciation except in isolated cases, for example the fact that the plural -s in English is really pronounced -z (e.g. beads, heads), a fact which can present difficulties for a native Spanish speaker. Of the 27 chapters the majority deal with verb syntax, the source of most problems, but there are chapters on noun gender, adjective comparison, and the many pronouns in the two languages. The authors include several valuable appendices: the principal irregular English verbs, the principal irregular Spanish verbs with all the irregular forms listed, a list of Spanish verbal types (a catch-all title which includes lists of the reflexive verbs, transitive and intransitive verbs of motion, verbs which always take a preposition, and so on). The book concludes with a valuable 21-page glossary of the grammatical terms which are used throughout the book and a complete index.

The authors have remodeled and recast the previous editions of this text, taking into account the wide classroom experience which each of the present (and past) authors have had. The resulting improvements have made this an indispensable book for anyone who does serious work in English and Spanish.
